Performance properties of solvent-based urethane topcoats formulated with fluorinated polymers are reviewed. Fluoro-urethanes offer outstanding gloss and color retention, good chemical resistance, and excellent adhesion. The long coating service life of fluoro-urethanes reduces the frequency of maintenance work and subsequent downtime interruption.
In June of 2006 the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) implemented new volatile organic compound (VOC) requirements for industrial maintenance coatings. Two years prior to this date The California Department of Transportation started looking for a replacement latex resin that would meet these new requirements and still have the same properties as currently used industrial maintenance bridge coatings.
Pigment and additive choices are crucial in getting good results when adapting fluoropolymer formulations for specific application requirements. This presentation will explore some specific case studies showing how paint formulation principles were applied to achieve superior coating performance for targeted substrates and application conditions.
The authors will provide a comprehensive comparison of two technologies, glass flake reinforced epoxy and fiber filled epoxy, specifically for use in severe sewer collection environments on concrete structures.
In this article, we will be presenting some background about the zinc‐in‐immersion technology itself while addressing some of the important questions where the two opposing sides commonly clash. A discussion over failure modes; reasons for failure; and alternate technologies will be discussed. Additional information will detail what factors and features are needed to develop a good lining to protect steel water tanks. The paper will conclude by discussing alternative coating options that exist (including “greener” versions) and expected performance levels these coatings are anticipated to provide.
A new innovative high performance, zero VOC acrylic topcoat offers excellent corrosion resistance, weathering durability, early moisture resistance, freeze thaw resistance and dirt pick up resistance that is comparable to high VOC commercial acrylic. The performance properties of this zero VOC acrylic topcoat are compared to a high VOC commercial acrylic topcoat used in protective coating applications.
For the last 20 years polyurethane has been the leading topcoat technology in corrosion systems for both marine and industrial use. Performance, protection, appearance and total cost effectiveness are some of the factor’s customers have taken into consideration. Customers have a long list of demands and polyurethane has become a technology choice for a wide number of end markets.
A new patent-pending resin technology incorporated into the epoxy/polysiloxane part A portion of a two-component coating system, using an amino-silane curing agent, has shown significant improvements in flexibility, gloss and color retention. Corrosion resistance and adhesion to non-sandblasted metal substrates have also shown improvements. The new resin technology may be considered for low-VOC and HAPs coating systems.
The San Mateo Bridge represents the largest application of thick film coatings for protection of a concrete highway bridge in the US to date. This challenging project was undertaken in order to provide a aggressive extension to the expected service life of the new concrete components of the widened bridge. This report provides a brief summary of the coating application process during construction followed by a report of a recent visual inspection performed at the five-year point in service.
It does not take one with too much intelligence to note that our infrastructure is in dire shape. Not only does this include our water & wastewater areas, but our road and bridge systems need substantial help. Deterioration due to environmental issues, water and chemicals that are used which cause for serious corrosion and erosion concerns. Over the years, a variety of methods have been employed to help with these issues, but all have individual characteristics and problems.
This is a general outline of different types of high-performance coatings used for industrial steel structures and maintenance. We will be discussing the different types of coatings and where and when they are to be used, the make-up of these coatings, application methods, advantages/disadvantages, tolerance, and limitations. I was going to discuss the cost range of each but due to the different performance levels that each brand offers it is hard to put cost in perspective without digging into specific brands of coatings.
