New cathodic protection (CP) criteria were developed based on AC and DC current densities measured using coupons. Using these criteria, the design of CP systems for newly constructed pipelines, paralleling high voltage AC power lines, and  DC rail transit systems, was successfully performed.

Effective pipeline external corrosion control can be achieved by maintaining an adequate balance between the coating condition and the cathodic protection level. When a pipeline is in a corridor shared with parallel buried pipelines and high voltage alternating current (HVAC) power transmission lines, determining the adequacy of the cathodic protection (CP) system becomes a challenge. Misinterpretation of data being collected, or unreliable data can lead to the implementation of either ineffective or excessive mitigation programs for these pipelines. To obtain a better representation of the year-round performance of the CP system, additional testing to the conventional adjustive survey or close interval potential survey (CIPS or CIS) might be required on transmission pipelines collocated in HVAC corridors. The variation of the structure-to-electrolyte potential values over time and the effect of polarization cell replacement (PCR) units should be assessed when determining the level of polarization of the pipeline. Data from a case study is analyzed to illustrate additional testing procedures required to minimize the effects of HVAC systems when monitoring the CP level on transmission pipelines. The proper interpretation of the field monitoring data allows pipeline operators to develop and implement effective corrosion control mitigation plans.

The risk of AC corrosion has always been linked in particular to the parallelisms of underground pipelines with HVAC lines, especially in those geographical areas where the morphology of the territory creates obligatory so-called "technological corridors", and therefore forces the coexistence of different services over long distances. More recently, the greater diffusion of AC-powered railway networks has further increased the AC interfering sources, while the use of more performing coatings on underground pipelines has on the one hand increased their insulation from the surrounding soil, and on the other has increased the risk of overprotection compared to old, less performing, or more degraded coatings. This paper, starting from a real case found in a gas distribution network in a European big city, will present the normative criteria to be used to keep the AC corrosion risk under control, and will highlight how precisely the simultaneous presence of cathodic overprotection may result in an autocatalytic cycle leading to accelerated AC corrosion, in which monitoring becomes essential in order to be able to carry out on time the appropriate corrective actions.
