This study focuses on a better understanding of significant pitting corrosion on coating surface damaged carbon steels, or low alloy steels, during salt spray testing for automotive applications. Anodic cyclic polarization test was used to evaluate the severity of pitting corrosion, and to estimate the corrosion rate of raw materials.

Overview of coatings for a cyclic-temperature environment. Test method, including a heat cycle between 21 to 300 deg-C simulating the dehydrator operation and exposure to salt spray. The performances of the three coatings were evaluated using this method. Factors to be considered for coating selection in the cyclic-temperature environment are discussed.c

Over the last few years, the protective coatings industry has seen an increased demand for high performance waterborne coatings in the field of corrosion protection. Market drivers such as “Sustainability”, “Greenability”, and ongoing regulatory and environmental concerns continue to force coatings producers to look for other viable options to replace conventional solvent borne technologies.
A new water-soluble quaternary ammonium compound, didecyldimethylammonium bicarbonate/carbonate (DDABC), has been evaluated as a corrosion inhibitor via standard electrochemical tests on steel and shown to be highly effective. At the proper dilution, the inhibitor migrates to the metal/solution interface and forms a monomolecular film on the anodic sites.
The creepage of corrosion underneath a coatings film applied to a steel test panel is often used as a performance test for the anti-corrosion properties of a coating system. Creepage is defined as the degree of corrosion (usually measured in mm) emanating away from a scribe line underneath a coating film applied to a steel substrate. There are several factors which may affect the degree of corrosion creep, one of which is the type and width of scribe cut into the coatings film to the steel substrate. There is a variety of scribing methods used in various test methods and specifications; however it is unclear if there is actually a performance difference observed in corrosion creep when using different scribe types.
