Vegetal polymers are today a cost effective solution for complex metallic geometry parts (bolts, flanges, valves, etc…), PVC vinyl film became the same for flat and semi flat shapes (bulkheads, tank walls, pipes, etc…). These methods do not require costly surface preparation such as SSPCSP10, just cleaning per SSPC-SP2. Together it leads complete and long longevity if compared to most of conventional painting procedures, generating both performance and economic benefits.

For a coatings project to become a Successful Coatings Project, the coatings specification should be clear and concise to be useful to the intended audience. The contractor, the owner and any other parties should be able to find and understand key elements such as the scope, surface preparation (including the appropriate standards) and the specified coating or lining system with the approved alternates.
In the past, the present and undoubtedly in the future, coating specifications will be written and included in bid packages that will end up on your desk, mine and our fellow colleagues. Often these specifications are poorly written, boiler plated or haphazardly thrown together to hopefully provide us with enough information to successfully win and complete a given contract.
November to March is a beautiful time of the year in the wintry climate of the United States and Canada. People participate in all kinds of wintertime activities. It is also the time owners of marine vessels working on the Great Lakes use to do repairs and maintenance, including painting. Although the weather during this time poses many challenges, necessity has been the mother of invention in coming up with equipment and products to meet this challenge.
This article focuses on protecting workers from exposure to inhalation and noise hazards during surface preparation work in coating operations. For easy reference, a guide to common acronyms and terms appears at the end of this article.
Statistical Process Control (SPC) has been implemented as a key component of Total Quality Initiatives with great success in every major industry worldwide. SPC is not commonplace in the industrial and commercial coatings application business. This paper introduces the audience to SPC and provides an example of it’s application in industrial coating surface preparation.
As a means of surface preparation for protective coatings, abrasive blasting provides proper surface roughness and increases the surface area, which are critical in achieving physical and chemical adhesion between steel surface and organic coatings. For application of high-performance coating in a new shipbuilding, the abrasive blasting cleaning is widely favored primarily because of its economic and performance benefits. The abrasive blasting, however, also requires the significant amount of labor hour, whereas its efficiency mainly depends on the blaster’s skill.
When coatings are applied to substrates as e.g., metal, the adhesion of the cured paint is a critical parameter for the final performance of the paint film. The adhesion of the paint to the substrate influences many properties of the paint, which including visual appearance, anticorrosive performance, flexibility, resistance against scribing and scratching, delamination, blistering and many more. Many actions can be taken to influence and improve the adhesion of a coating to a substrate.
Industrial protective coatings can be surprisingly complicated for the inexperienced user or specifier. For example, when fabricating complex structures, the simple question of when during fabrication to paint can have an array of interesting cost and performance implications. Other issues include tradeoffs associated with degree of surface preparation and inspection for coating coverage. The paper will explore some of the reasons why they can be complicated in the context of four issues that can impact an industrial protective coatings project.
The following paper will briefly review the origin and development of dehumidification and climate control equipment for the most efficient surface preparation and coatings to surfaces in enclosed spaces. As the needs of the surface preparation and coatings industry evolve, so to do the requirements and ancillary equipment used by field personnel working on these projects.
The intention of the study is to explore potential field maintenance products with service temperature ranges of 0 to 65°C for patch application, including patch repairing and to provide corrosion protection for irregularly shaped components, such as fittings and electrical connection to pipe (e.g., cadweld). Viscoelastic materials were selected as potential candidates due to their inherent features of cold-flow capability, low water permeability, easy application (by hand and directly applied to surface), and compatibility with a variety of existing pipeline coatings.
