A new developed Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with improved corrosion resistance in flue gas desulfurization and chemical process applications

H. Alves D. Kurumlu R. Behrens
ThyssenKrupp VDM GmbH

Alloy 2120 is a new Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with low carbon content and additions of nitrogen to improve strength. The alloy was developed at ThyssenKrupp VDM and shows excellent balanced corrosion resistance under oxidizing as well as under reducing environments.

As a results of its improved Mo and N contents the new material is characterised by superior resistance to general corrosion in acids and acidic mixtures even when contaminated with chlorides as well as to localised corrosion accompanied with higher strength in regard to all other C-type alloys. Good fabricability and thermal stability are also given.

This work reports on the main properties of alloy 2120 and its behavior in interesting areas of application like flue gas desulfurization severely corrosive chemical processes and geothermal environments.
