Abstract
The inhibition effect of Mundulea sericea leaves extract (MSLE) on the corrosion of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl and 0.5 M H2SO4 solution was investigated by mass loss linear polarization resistance (LPR) potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The inhibition of acid extracts was found to vary with concentration temperature and immersion time. The results show that leaves extract of Mundulea sericea is a very potent inhibitor and behaves more efficiently in 1 M HCl than in and 0.5 M H2SO4. The adsorption of Mundulea sericea on mild steel surface in both acid solutions was found to obey Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherms. The activation energy and other thermodynamic parameters for the inhibition process were calculated. These thermodynamic parameters show strong interaction between inhibitor and mild steel surface. Polarization curves reveal that Mundulea sericea acts as a mixed-type inhibitor in both acid media. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the dissolution process occurs under activation control. The inhibitive action of leaves extract of mild steel are discussed on the basis of adsorption of molecules on the electrode surface through the active centers. The inhibition efficiencies of leaves extract of Mundulea sericea obtained by classical mass loss method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were in good agreement. The surface morphology of mild steel in the presence of leaves extract of Mundulea sericea was studied by scanning electron microscopy.
