The reinforced concrete tunnels structures located under water are generally protected from rebar corrosion using waterproof membranes as the first defence. However once the waterproof membrane fails caused by various reasons including poor installation aging the movement of the structure settlement soil pressure etc. seawater or blackish water gets to the concrete under the waterproof membrane resulting in water leakage.
The mechanism of the rebar corrosion caused by chloride contaminated water is quite different from the structures exposing to marine or de-icing salt environment because the leakage water travels through cracks in concrete. When a crack in concrete reaches the internal concrete surface of the roof and walls obvious water leakages are visually detected. The salt contaminated water which reaches to the internal surface flows along the concrete surfaces and then chlorides diffuse into the concrete. As a result wide-spread corrosion occurs. On the other hand when salt water get in the internal cracks which do not reach the internal surface visual water leakages do not occur. In this condition it is difficult to detect the corrosion until the concrete damages without conducting corrosion tests.
This paper will discuss the mechanism of rebar corrosion of underwater reinforced concrete tunnel once water leakage occurs.
