Materials performance in supercritical carbon dioxide has been explored as part of ongoing research for the supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle. The supercritical Brayton cycle is under consideration for power conversion of nuclear process heat and other energy-related applications because it allows for a system simplification and high power conversion efficiencies. Testing was carried out in a high temperature high pressure autoclave designed and constructed for testing materials corrosion in supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) environments at temperatures and pressures up to 650°C and 20 MPa respectively. The system is equipped with a gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GCMS) unit for measuring inlet and outlet gas compositions to ensure consistent gas chemistry. Corrosion behavior of select alloys was studied after exposure to SC-CO2 at 450°C 550°C and 650°C and 20MPa for exposure duration up to 1000 hours. Tests were performed using research grade (99.9998%) CO2. The alloys selected for this study were two ferritic steels F92 and F122 two austenitic alloys 347 stainless steel and alloy 800H and three advanced concept AFA (alumina-forming austenitic) alloys. The corrosion performance of the alloys was evaluated using a number of techniques including weight change measurements as well as SEM/EDS analyses of the alloy samples after corrosion testing.
