99177 ONSHORE FACILITIES CATHODIC PROTECTION RETROFITS A CASE STUDY OF RAS SHUIKIER DISTRICT IN THE GULF OF SUEZ

Ras Shuikier facilities in the Gulf of Suez handle 800 thousands Bbls per day of crude oil with 60% water content. The infrastructure of the oil processing facilities includes 110,000 square meters of buried steel. An impressed current cathodic protection system was installed to externally protect buried portions. The oil processing area was divided into five major sections. Each section was isolated to avoid current leaks. The sections were fed individually using adequate current source and scratch for the old buried pipelines. 25 AC-DA electrical rectifiers with total current out put of 3026 Amperes were installed. A periodic survey at 3 months interval was established to follow up and confirm the protection level. However, after 6 months of installation, a sharp drop in potential level was observed in two areas. A retrofitting project was therefore implemented by means of ground bed repairs and re-distribution of individual sections, upgrading electrical cables, and adding new anodes. Cost was considered in this retrofitting project. The system is now operating satisfactory for more than 3 years after rehabilitation. This paper illustrate the work achieved to diagnose the problem and retrofit the system.
