The waste package for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste at the potential repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, may consist of an outer container made of Alloy 22 and an inner container made of Type 316 nuclear grade stainless steel. The crevice corrosion propagation behavior of Alloy 22 coupled to platinum or Titanium Grade 7 in 4 M MgCl2 solution and in 5 M NaCl solution at 95 °C [203 °F] and 110 °C [230 °F] was investigated. Crevice corrosion was initiated under open circuit conditions in 4 M MgCl2 solution. No stifling or repassivation was observed by coupling Alloy 22 to platinum or Titanium Grade 7 in 4 M MgCl2 solution. The coupling material has a strong effect on the propagation rate of Alloy 22 crevice corrosion. The propagation rate of crevice corrosion by coupling Alloy 22 to platinum or Titanium Grade 7 appears to be higher than when coupled to a large plate of Alloy 22. However, results from longer time tests are highly uncertain.
