Prior to application of a new inhibitor in oil or gas production, the system compatibility of the new chemical must be confirmed. Based upon an upfront analysis of metals and elastomers encountered in the system, material compatibility tests are performed under system conditions. The systems analysis is a key step in the flow assurance process. A case study on an offshore production is presented including a detailed description of the experimental procedures. The materials studied included synthetic elastomers such as PTFE and natural rubbers.
