Corrosion mechanisms in gas systems containing both high concentrations of CO2 and small amounts of H2S are complex and difficult to predict. The production from Fort Liard gas wells has a CO2 to H2S ratio of approximately 40:1, is saturated with water and has no liquid hydrocarbon. The composition of these wells combined with extremely high production rates creates a system susceptible to both high corrosion and erosion rates. Proper design, operation and monitoring of this system to minimize corrosion damage was essential
to economic production of these wells. This paper will describe the design of the well completion, facilities and pipeline as well as the development of inhibition, operation and monitoring strategies for
downhole and facility corrosion control.
