This paper summarizes the results of a sensitivity study conducted on corrosion clusters on a steel pipeline, specifically (1) the change in cluster effective length as the individual anomalies that make up the cluster grow and (2) the effect of changes in effective length on the remaining life calculated using deterministic methods. Two growth scenarios are considered: clusters that grow at the same rate along the cluster versus clusters that grow at a depth-based corrosion growth rate (e.g., deeper areas grow faster than shallower areas). The study shows that, in both scenarios, the effective lengths of long clusters shrink with growth. Examples demonstrate the impact of the results for a semi-elliptically shaped anomaly. The change in effective length and the corresponding change in critical or maximum depth led to an increase in calculated remaining life of 20% to 40% for the cases studied.

In the presence of oxygen, all of the samples evaluated in this study produced varying degrees of SCC, except for one of the producer ethanol samples. Corrosion in acidic solutions frequently leads to equipment failure in industry. The ability to model corrosion in acidic solutions is thus necessary to increase asset integrity. A prerequisite for any corrosion model is the accurate knowledge of solution thermodynamics. In this study, a previously developed electrochemical module has been integrated with the Mixed-Solvent Electrolyte (MSE) thermodynamic model. MSE has been previously proven to accurately represent the behavior of solutions, including solubility limits, pH, and transport properties. Here, the accuracy of MSE in predicting speciation in acidic systems is demonstrated. The electrochemical module, which incorporates partial anodic and cathodic reactions, can model active corrosion, active-passive transition, as well as dissolution in the passive state. The model is shown to quantitatively predict the corrosion rates of two duplex stainless steels, i.e., 2507 (UNS S32750) and 255 (UNS S32550) in acid mixtures containing both oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids. The effects of aggressive (fluoride and chloride) and inhibitive (nitrate) species are also accurately predicted. Simulated polarization curves are presented for the mixed acid systems to illustrate the effect of different species on the anodic and cathodic processes.

However, in the foreseen future, fossil fuel will still be the major source to meet our needs on energy.1 The combustion of fossil fuel for power and heat is always accompanied by CO2 emission, which is believed to be in large correlation to global warming.2 To control the CO2 emission and reduce the negative effects, carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been rapidly developed in fossil fuel combustion power plants.3, 4 One of the crucial parts of CCS is the longdistance transportation of CO2, during which a large amount of captured CO2 is transported to storage sites. Pipeline network is chosen as transportation system due to its high efficiency and moderate cost.5 And the transported CO2 streams are usually compressed into supercritical CO2 (s-CO2).6

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is a significant concern in the oil and gas industry. This paper presents several case studies of CUI, including instances of External Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (ECSCC). In our facilities, applying insulation material sprayed with a specific corrosion inhibitor to the internal surface is considered a temporary solution for equipment where CUI is a concern due to damaged coatings. In our previous study, this non-combustible corrosion inhibitor containing phosphate and nitrite showed effective corrosion inhibition in carbon steel even when rusted. However, we considered that an Active Path Corrosion can be occurred under loaded stress portions. To replicate chloride-concentrated environments under insulation, a 70-day immersion test was conducted using U-bend type test specimens of carbon steel in a NaCl solution with the inhibitor. The tested specimens with the inhibitor maintained a metallic appearance without stress corrosion cracking. However, crevice corrosion was observed. These results suggest that the corrosion inhibitor may have limited effectiveness in chloride-concentrated environments. We concluded that it is beneficial to perform cleaning before applying the insulation with corrosion inhibitor and to implement other permanent measures before chloride concentration significantly increases.

External corrosion on offshore O&G platforms is one of the biggest threats to asset integrity and its management is a large operational expense. Many operators now implement risk-based assessment (RBA) programs where all equipment is assessed periodically with the aim to reduce operational costs while maintaining integrity. Regulatory codes for offshore platforms in the GoM require a visual inspection of all pressure equipment and piping every five-years. The design of the PortMiami Tunnel (PMT) utilizes segmental reinforced concrete lining panels. Early corrosion initiation is expected to be mitigated by the specification of low permeability ternary-blend concrete and minimum three-inch clear cover, but there is uncertainty in the long-term corrosion and materials durability (particularly considering its ambitious 150 year design life) and uncertainty of the extent of possible loss of concrete integrity of the structure at extended times. Therefore, interest lies in continual long term corrosion monitoring of the tunnel panels. The objectives of this testing program are to provide information on the panels that may indicate possible early corrosion development in key areas of the tunnel and to provide field data to supplement laboratory testing to provide recommendations for best practices addressing corrosion prevention and mitigation for submerged structures. The findings from corrosion monitoring for over 10 years of service are presented.
