Digitalization of the Energy Sector Through Transformative and Emerging Technologies

Organizations are undergoing radical changes to improve their business performance to stay competitive in today’s digital environment. From the C-suite to shop floor, decision makers are going through radical rethinking (and exploring new ways) of how their organizations utilize and manage the intersection of technology, people, and processes to fundamentally change the way they do business, remain competitive, and maximize business value for their customers.
The “fourth industrial revolution” (Industry 4.0) brought about digitization of data and information. With “internet of things” (IoT) sensors, companies are able to capture information that was inaccessible digitally prior and make it available for optimizing production, enhancing performance, and improving reliability of operating assets. Industrial IoT (IIoT) technologies are now commonplace in the energy sector; employed across upstream, downstream, and midstream assets, as well as in utilities. However, with increased deployments and adoption of IIoT also comes the need to deploy latest technologies in pursuit of new business models.
The energy sector and particularly the oil and gas industry has traditionally been slow in adopting new and emerging technologies. Other sectors of the economy are undergoing disruption at a much faster pace than the energy sector, with new Startups using technology to radically change interaction of people and processes, develop new business models, and create value. However, in recent years, technology is being employed not only to replace manual processes with automated electronic systems, but to reinvent ways oil and gas companies do business, execute work functions, and interact with customers. Disruptive technologies are being harnessed and deployed at scale by connecting machines and intelligent devices to create a smart network of interconnected systems across the value chain. However, the depth of what can be achieved is yet to be fully harnessed.
For instance, analyzing industry data collected on a large scale both at the edge and on cloud to identify operational patterns and make optimal business predictions across the value chain. The
“fifth industrial revolution,” Industry 5.0 is the new emerging industrial technology that enables collaboration between humans and smart systems. Industry 4.0 lays the foundation for this next emerging technology that incorporates human behavior and cognitive capabilities into industry automation

It is well known in the hot rolled steel making business that nonmetallic inclusions play critical
role in defining steel performance. The objective of this paper is to study laminations that were
detected via Phased Array UT system in X60MS Class-C High Frequency Welded Pipe intended for
offshore application. The linear intermittent laminations appear along the pipe and adjacent to
the weld seam from both sides at a width of 30 to 40 mm with various depths. Technical review
was carried out on 5 available pipes, pertaining to the same heat of the original pipe identified
earlier with lamination, through model experiments; both on the laboratory and on the industrial
scale. At the beginning, depth and distribution of detected laminations were analyzed by manual
UT mapping using normal beam probe. Metallurgical analysis via Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX)
was carried out on three samples to determine the chemical composition as well as the
morphology of the lamination. The type of inclusion which turned out to be type B (Alumina-
Al2O3) inclusion was identified by evaluating EDX results using Method A per ASTM E45. As it is
a pure material based incident, failure analysis was carried out by the steel maker to identify the
associated root causes from process control prospective and the appropriate preventive
measures to avoid reoccurrence. Eventually, the applied quality control measures during
manufacturing process of HFW pipes, represented in the deployment of UT systems, were
reviewed to identify the reason behind missing such important defect before pipes are being
shipped to the client.

Mechanized GMAW Root Profile Irregularities and Its Effects

Product Number: MPWT19-15392

This paper illustrates and discusses a failure that occurred during construction of a carbon steel pipeline, in which the root profile irregularities led to an unacceptable surface condition that affected the application of liquid epoxy coating. This irregularity was identified to be weld root protrusions having sharp edges due to poor implementation of Mechanized GMAW welding process and periodic maintenance of equipment which left a gap between copper backing shoes of the internal clamps. Therefore, the integrity and effectiveness of applying internal coating of carbon steel pipeline was jeopardized, which necessitated all effected weld joints with unacceptable root profile to be rectified.
In order to identify the root cause(s) of these irregularities, the client and contractor performed an in-depth thorough investigation. In addition to the investigation findings, the paper will also highlight the following:
a. The resolution, which involved the cutting out and re-welding of more than 1200 joints.
b. The significant impact of the rectification process on the project’s schedule and cost.
c. Recommendations for future projects.
Furthermore, as all data and findings collected during this investigation were crosschecked against project design and construction requirements, the following identified areas of improvement and preventive measures are recommended:
a. Proper project planning, execution and resource availability.
b. Pre-production qualification of welding/coating application and quality assurance process.
c. Periodic preventive maintenance of the welding equipment.
d. Application of improved techniques/technologies to verify the weld root profile.
Implementing the above should result in enhanced process control, improved root profile and reduced coating application deficiencies that will minimize reworks, reduce rejection, improve
progress, and ultimately provide the desired quality for both weldments and coating at an optimum cost.
