Dissimilar metal welds (DMWs) are commonly used in the pressure vessel nozzle to safe-end weld between the ferritic low-alloy steels (LAS) and the austenitic stainless steels (SS), using a nickel-base filler metal. The complex DMW interface consists of different microstructural regions including, for instance, the heat-affected zone (HAZ), carbon-depleted zone (CDZ), carbon build-up at fusion boundary, partially melted zone (PMZ) and carbide precipitation zone. There is still knowledge lacking on the microstructural characteristics of the interface of DMWs upon post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). DMWs are potential concerns regarding the structural integrity of the nuclear power systems. In particular, the LAS/nickel-base alloy weld metal interface is known to develop a local strength mismatch upon PWHT and during long-term ageing. A significant chemical composition gradient, especially in terms of carbon (C) and chromium (Cr) associated with a complex microstructure have been observed to form at the interfaces. The different welding orientation, heat transfer and PWHT can result in different microstructure and mechanical properties.

Apart from the well-tried cellulosic electrodes, in the range from E6010-E9010, there are
also low hydrogen grades of weld consumables, which are used in vertical downhill
position - commonly called as BVD (Basic Vertical Down) electrodes. In addition, the
seamless flux cored wires, are gaining prominence in the welding industry as a better
solution compared to the conventional cellulosic electrodes.
The development of BVD electrodes started because of the desire to use high-strength
TM pipe steels with relatively high toughness (e.g. X80). Cellulosic electrodes could not
meet the requirements for cold crack resistance and high toughness properties of the
weld metal. To a high degree, economical efficiency is determined by the achievable
deposition rate and the possible welding speeds. In comparison to basic vertical-up
electrodes, significant time advantage of 40-50% can be achieved with the use of BVD
electrodes for the fill and cap layers.
Seamless Flux Cored wires for pipeline applications follow a different manufacturing
approach compared to the conventional folded techniques and are much reliable with
consistent performance in terms of weldability and quality. The seamless FCAW wires,
offers a unique and trustworthy solution in terms of arc stability and low defect rates.
These wires are also suitable to be used under sour service applications having been
tested for Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) and Sulfide Stress Cracking applications.

Large scale offshore wind farms are being planned globally and there is a general trend that the size of wind farms, with the installed wind turbines in each farm is becoming greater in number. High build-high solid protective coating is a robust solution to offshore structures splash zone anti-corrosive protection. The importance of coating thickness building-up during application is vital to secure the long-term protection. Furthermore, to have an efficient manufacturing process, application and curing speed is also becoming critical. In this regard, unsaturated polyester coating with outstanding application and turn-over efficiency delivers extra value to both customer and applicator, where the cost of coating, time, and application resources are extremely important. In this work, curing kinetics of unsaturated polyester coating is studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Rheometer to evaluate consuming rate of reaction and the cross-linking. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis is utilized to study the glass transition temperature, also to align the storage modulus and hardness development in dry film. In doing so, we have carried out both microscopic and macroscopic mechanical analysis to eventually explain how and why unsaturated polyester coating delivers unique value to faster manufacturing for offshore windmill monopile industry. Knowledge gained in this study is beneficial for the fast-growing offshore wind and sustainability.

Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes are widely used as an alternative to metallic piping in challenging environments, such as concentrated acids. However, compatibility with the environment is typically described only in qualitative terms, and non-destructive inspection techniques do not provide data that can be used to accurately quantify in-service degradation. Consequently, remnant life prediction as the basis for maintenance and replacement of non-metallic piping presents a considerable challenge. The ISO-14692 standard provides a methodology for qualification of GRP piping that uses data from tests carried out with potable water, which can be scaled using a factor for other service fluids, although a default value of 1.0 is commonly used. This paper extends that design practice specified in ISO-14692 by incorporating the chemical compatibility factors as described in EN 13121 for design of GRP tanks and vessels. This procedure is used to calculate a chemical de-rating factor for long-term hoop stress, in addition to the standard design lifetime factor defined in ISO-14692. The combined de-rating relationship is repurposed to evaluate the amount of degradation under the actual service conditions experienced by the piping. Examples of this approach are provided for non-metallic piping carrying a range of service fluids in an operating plant.
