The deposition of elemental sulfur is a major concern in the gas and oil industries. The effect of sulfur deposition on nickel-based alloy 825 under severe conditions is not well understood. This work investigates the impact of elemental sulfur deposition on Alloy 825 under two conditions using four-point bend test in accordance with NACE TM0316.The results show that alloy 825 samples were not affected by way of SSC, SCC, pitting or other corrosion damage mechanisms in temperature of 90° C, pressure of 75 bar, Chloride level of 1000 ppm, a partial pressure of H2S of 12 bara, and a partial pressure of CO2 of 55 bara with present of elemental sulfur. A further autoclave exposure test was performed in which alloy 825 samples were exposed in 20 bara H2S partial pressure and 57 bara CO2 partial pressure in 21,853 ppm chloride and =150gL-1 elemental sulfur at 190°C for 720 hours. Under this condition, alloy 825 shows environmentally assisted corrosion as well as SCC on all samples. As a conclusion, alloy 825 is not a robust material against elemental sulfur related degradation at high temperature and pressure with high H2S and CO2 environment. Hence, safety risk from elemental sulfur deposition at high temperature should be carefully considered and evaluated when using alloy 825. The limit tested in this paper could provide a reference for selecting alloy 825 in presence of sulfur.

Electrical Resistance (ER) based probes are widely used to monitor corrosion of the aboveground storage tank (AST) bottoms. Prevention of soil-side corrosion of the bottom plates of aboveground crude oil storage tanks is a major challenge in the oil and gas industry. Vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) are increasingly being used to mitigate tank bottom corrosion. Therefore monitoring AST bottom corrosion and VCI effectiveness is an important factor in determining the bottom plate corrosion rate and in taking preventive action such as application of VCIs. ER probes are based on the bulk resistivity measurements. The change in resistivity data over a given period is converted to corrosion rates. Since the resistivity is the bulk measurement the ER-measured corrosion rate is an average value representing general pitting and microbiological induced corrosion. A study was conducted to rigorously compare the ER probe measurements with the corrosion observed on the mass-loss coupons. The ER probes were placed in a corrosive sand environment along with the mass-loss coupons which experienced both general and pitting corrosion. The coupons were removed after 6 months and ER probe data were continuously recorded over the test duration. The coupons were scanned using a laser profilometer which provided metal depth versus position data. The coupon data were analyzed to estimate the corrosion rate distribution. In parallel the ER probe data were also analyzed using the rolling average method. The two data sets were compared to identify similarities and delineate differences between the ER probes and mass-loss coupons. This analysis was used to determine suitability of using the ER probes for monitoring the tank bottom corrosion and VCIs’ effectiveness.

To better understand the Mg galvanic corrosion, a gel electrolyte was employed. The gel electrolyte was doped with a pH indicator, serving to unveil and monitor the development of alkaline fronts that evolve in parallel with the evolution of H2. Using RGB (Red, Green, Blue) image processing as a semi-quantitative technique, it became feasible to generate transient 2D maps with proper detail regarding the pH evolution into the electrolyte and to provide new information about the galvanic corrosion of Mg. Findings revealed a significant pH decrease in regions where Mg dissolution was more pronounced. A local anodic polarization was achieved by coupling magnesium with A97075. The findings suggest that Mg hydrolysis is responsible for the local pH drop. Additionally, a biunivocal correspondence has been established between the maximum pH value observed in the electrolyte and the specific location where the Mg(OH)2 compound is generated.

Pre-commissioning hydrostatic testing of pipelines and the resulting corrosion (MIC) issues are often linked to test water quality, as well as post-test cleaning operations. In a 1998 study, it was reported that localized corrosion (pitting/crevice corrosion) accounted for 20% of failures in the chemical process industry with an estimated one half of those being MIC failures. Identification of MIC failures is not straightforward. Common characteristic features such as pit clustering, “tunneling” of pits, tuberculation, high microbiological counts, presence of sulfides (in the case of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB)) and preferential weld attack have been used to anecdotally pinpoint field failures towards MIC.

Ni-base alloy weld material has been widely used for primary reactor components of BWR. Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in Ni-base alloy welds is of an increased importance and an ongoing subject in the industry to secure material reliability of the components especially for long-term operation of light water reactors. Although alloy 82 has shown excellent service performance in BWR applications, it is known that alloy 82 exhibit SCC susceptibility in laboratory tests under simulated BWR environment with a combination of particular, severe test conditions such as high level of material cold work and highly accelerated environment. In addition, few experiences with SCCs in the welds associated with alloy 82 have been recently reported in the operating BWR plants.
