The installation of metallic coupons in the vicinity of buried pipes under cathodic protection (CP) allows theoretically to measure the potential and the current density through the simulated coating defect. Nevertheless this type of monitored coupon does not provide direct information on the actual efficiency of the CP and corrosion rates that could be caused by a CP failure over time or not adapted CP design. According to the soil resistivity and the corrosion potential in absence of CP a protection potential is generally targeted following the standard recommendations. However the soil resistivity as well as the corrosion potential might depend on the seasonal fluctuations and the protection potential might vary as function of the considered standard. Moreover all soils parameters cannot be considered in recommendations from standards and cathodic protection criteria can be sometimes debatable. In this study very sensitive electrical resistance (ER) sensors allowing obtaining precise corrosion data in real-time were adapted for soil applications. They were used in the selected soils and conditions to determine the off potential and current density corresponding to a corrosion rate of 10 µm/year which corresponds to the maximal corrosion rate of buried structures considered as protected according the standard ISO 15589-1:2015. The adapted ER sensors appeared to be particularly suitable for determining the protection potential and CP criteria in a relatively short time. For the tested soils and conditions the results showed that the cathodic protection criteria recommended in ISO 15589-1: 2015 are conservative compared to those measured experimentally. This method therefore seems particularly relevant for the determination of the protection potential in complex or polluted media in the absence of data in the literature.

Anomalous localized corrosion of submerged steel H-piles was detected in a Florida bridge spanning over a brackish river. Microbiological and chemical analysis of the waters samples showed high population of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and high concentration of sulfate ions. The steel piles had noticeable heavy marine growth which were thought to have an effect on corrosion process by supporting biofilm development creating localized corrosion and differential aeration cells. As part of ongoing research to identify the role of physical properties of macrofouling on the aggravation of microbiologically influences corrosion(MIC) of submerged steel bridge the objective of the work presented here was to identify the influence of microbe availability to promote SRB proliferation under occluded and porous fouling spaces and development of MIC there. Both laboratory and field exposure tests were conducted. Laboratory experiments were carried out in nutrient-rich environments inoculated with SRB with both occluded and porous crevice conditions characteristic of hard and soft marine fouling. Field exposure tests included long term exposure of steel coupons subjected to varying submersion depths in the river at the Florida bridge site. Electrochemical tests included the measurement of open circuit potential (OCP) linear polarization resistance (LPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was confirmed that SRB proliferation can occur as the macroorganism can accommodate different environmental condition. Occurrence of severe corrosion conditions was shown to be possible in the presence of macrofoulers and SRB.

Duplex stainless steels were born and have been actively developed by European companies since 1935. Their properties make them very attractive compared to equivalent austenitic grades: higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking higher mechanical characteristics and lower alloy cost. They are today commonly used for Oil & Gas applications. However these materials cannot be used below -50°C (-58°F) because their toughness strongly decreases below this temperature. In addition they may require special precautions for welding in order to keep the ferrite content in heat affected zone lower than 65% as recommended by several standards. This paper will present the recent development of a 22%Cr duplex stainless steel grade with enhanced weldability and low-temperature properties. This material is based on the UNS S31803/S32205 designations and obtained by means of slight changes in the chemical analyses and production route compared to the conventional duplex grades. A strong increase in toughness values is obtained at low temperature pushing back the limits of use from -50°C (-58°F) to -100°C (-148°F). Toughness values obtained on samples up to 150 mm thick will be provided. In addition there is no need to control the minimum heat input to obtain the appropriate ferrite content in heat affected zone. This paper will describe the main service properties of this material focusing especially on corrosion and comparing its performance to a conventional 22%Cr duplex. The results of corrosion tests obtained in sour environment will be given. They were conducted on welded specimens in a solution containing 100 g/l NaCl at pH 4.5 under 0.5 bar H2S using the constant load test method. Stress corrosion cracking results obtained in synthetic seawater with and without cathodic charging will also be provided. Keywords: Stainless Steels; Duplex; Ferrite content; Oil & Gas; Low temperature; Weldability; H2S; Corrosion
