Shielding of cathodic protection (CP) by disbonded coatings is considered a “worst case scenario” for external corrosion in the pipeline industry. It has been hypothesized that if coatings were partially permeable to CP, the imbalance between cathodic and anodic reactions would induce a high pH environment under disbonded coatings and that would impede corrosion. However, direct experimental evidence of this process has been limited. Moreover, this line of reasoning is often inversed incorrectly assuming that the only reason for the presence of a high pH environment under disbonded coatings is their partial permeability to CP current. 

The recent development of an electrochemical self-validating technique to measure the relatively small ionic currents that could permeate through defect free coatings has shed a new light on the topic. It has been found that most of the commercial pipeline coatings tested in unaged conditions present a CP shielding behavior. Accelerated hydrothermal ageing of fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coatings was performed to study the effect of water absorption. Ageing resulted in major plasticization, which increased the conduction of CP current through FBE coatings. However, FBE seems to be partially permeable to H+ and/or OH-, which reduces its ability to form and retain a high pH environment under disbonded coatings. In conjunction, these results thus indicate the extremely limited capability of commercial pipeline coatings to prevent corrosion in case of disbondment.

An operating company was concerned that its biocide and corrosion mitigation strategy was not sufficient to control corrosion in their pigging operations across the Gulf Coast of Texas. They provided water samples from several pigging access points that were heavily contaminated with SRBs, APBs, black deposits and oil. H2S was present in most of the samples suggesting a heavy presence of SRBs. They suspected that the black deposits were most likely FeS caused by the presence of microorganisms interacting with their pipelines. Indeed, culture vial tests (sometimes referred to as “bug bottles”) proved that the samples were heavily contaminated with microorganisms.

With the objective of reducing the number of welding passes in thick plate welding, hybrid laser-arc welding technique was utilized to one-pass weld 25mm thick steel plates. Butt joints were designed with a square groove and 2.5mm air gap. Either ceramic strip or submerged arc welding flux was used for joint backing. The joint gap was filled up with cut-wire particles of the same chemical compositions as those of the arc welding filler wire. Cut-wire particles were inserted to protect the backing material from direct interaction with the laser irradiation. Welding parameters were optimized to obtain full penetration joints without damaging the backing material. Square groove butt joints of 25mm thickness were successfully welded in one welding pass. Similarly, 50 mm thick square groove butt joints could be double-side welded

The large interest in graphene-based materials and other carbon-based polymorphs and nanomaterials are truly far-reaching. The industrial scale and possibility of applying these to advanced manufacturing and commercial application have resulted in high throughput synthesis and lower costs. There is primary interest on their electrical and thermal conductivity properties. However other applications are based on their ability to form very stable colloidal complexes. This talk will focus on the class of graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) nanomaterials that have been prepared with high loading in polymer matrices and ultrathin films to result in: anti-corrosion coatings semiconductor thin films patterning and anti-microbial properties. We describe the preparation of very stable dispersions that can be used for nanopatterning in films as well as anti-corrosion-superhydrophobic coatings. Interestingly by preparation of colloidal particles that can be stabilized at liquid-liquid and air-liquid interfaces functional Janus type nanoparticles can be prepared which have interesting uses in dispersants rheological modifiers and smart fluids. An important consideration is their use as anti-corrosion additives and the importance of nanostructuring.

The highly corrosive behavior of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is known to originate from its intrinsic hygroscopic nature. Refining and co-processing process units for biofuels are often exposed to highly concentrated NH4Cl solution either resulting from water vaporization from an HCl and NH3 containing solution when the temperature increases or salt deposition from vapor phase when the temperature drops. For the latter case, once it reacts with water vapor present in the process, the deposited NH4Cl salts forms a concentrated and corrosive solution through deliquescence (unlike in conventional refinery). Consequently, severe pitting and localized corrosion are reported in hydrogenation and fluid cracking units. Therefore, studying corrosion resistance alloys (CRA) compatibility in the presence of concentrated NH4Cl salt solution is crucial to mitigate corrosion in the process. This paper reports the experimental evaluation of corrosion resistance of different CRAs, based on corrosion rate and stress corrosion cracking, exposed to saturated NH4Cl solution in the temperature range of 130-220°C.
