Carbon steel (CS) material is widely used for the equipment in oil and gas production industry due to its mechanical properties associated with a relatively low cost, compared to other materials. Depending on the corrosiveness of the fluid that is vehiculated, the use of carbon steel is generally associated with the injection of a corrosion inhibitor (CI) in order to mitigate internal corrosion. Corrosion inhibitors are generally used in continuous injection at an injection rate that is depending on the corrosiveness of the fluid. Based on the operational feedback, the internal standards are recommending for multiphase pipelines CI injection rates in the range of 50 - 70 ppm for temperature below 80°C of and of 150 to 200ppm for temperatures above 100°C. These injection dosages are typical values that are considered in the laboratory tests for the qualification of the CI and they are adjusted on-site based on the monitoring results.

EPRI has been supporting the nuclear industry over the last several decades to provide the technical bases and research to support the operation of the current fleet of nuclear power plants beyond their initial licensing period (typically 30-40 years of operation). Hundreds of technical reports and guidance documents have been issued on topics ranging from developing and implementing aging management programs, identification, and evaluation of degradation mechanisms, and remaining useful life of key passive components (e.g., reactor vessel internals, cables, and concrete). A previous 2019 ANS Environmental Degradation Conference paper discussed the research goals and results of EPRI up to 2019 for concrete and cables. These research results provide a living technical basis as these results are supplemented regularly with industry operating experience, inspection results, and condition monitoring or non-destructive evaluations.

Approximately 20% of the electricity produced in the United States (U.S.) comes from nuclear power plants (NPPs). Duplex stainless steels (DSS) are widely used as structural alloys in marine and energy industries because of their excellent combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In light water reactor (LWR) power plants, these alloys find their applications in piping and internal structural components. With a currently designed lifetime of 40 years, these DSS components show little degradation in their mechanical properties. However, most current and future nuclear power plants are expected to operate beyond 60 years. This prolonged service period challenges the integrity of materials and components in the reactor. DSS component lifetime in the reactor is subjected to elevated temperatures, internal pressures, and corrosive environments.

The data produced in this study indicates that there are differences between the ICRI CSP comparator panels and TACM CSP comparator panels. Further, there are differences between taking direct measurements from known surfaces (i.e., the ICRI and TACM CSP panels) and obtaining indirect measurements from an epoxy putty casting of those same known surfaces. Therefore, it is important that the specifier indicate which method is to be used when qualitative or quantitative methods are invoked in the contract documents.
