High Voltage Holiday Detectors are commonly used to locate pinholes in coatings by generating a spark when an electrode passes over an area of bare substrate. Pinholes and areas of a non-continuous coating film can provide a direct path for premature failure of the coated asset. Historically a rule of thumb across the coating industry had been to utilize 100 volts per mil of coating as the recommended voltage setting for holiday detection. A paper presented at a recent AMPP conference1 provided compelling evidence, and confirmed industry suspicions, that the rule of thumb and test voltages specified by nearly every published standard were inadequate to reliably detect all holidays. In response, industry stakeholders worked to build consensus and update the relevant standards with science-based and experimentally-proven specifications that help ensure High Voltage Holiday Detectors are used appropriately, and with the correct voltage settings, to reliably detect holidays. This paper provides a review of these updates.

Uncontrolled growth of microorganisms in the oil field production systems have a major negative impact on the productivity and asset integrity in oil and gas industry. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been found as the most troublesome group of microorganisms among all organisms involved in MIC of carbon steel and other metals used in the oil industry (Abdullah et al 2014). The formation of SRB biofilm on steel surface can affect the kinetics of anodic and cathodic reactions, leading to an acceleration of steel corrosion (Beech and Sunner, 2004: Zuo,2007). In addition to that, SRB contributes to hydrogen sulfide-driven reservoir souring, increased suspended solids, reservoir plugging, etc., in oil field sites.

Evaluation of Corrosion Inhibitor Gel Filler Retention in Shorted Casings: A Pressure Test Study

Pipelines casings regulated by PHMSA require the mitigation of shorted casings. One method that aligns with the PHMSA guidelines is the utilization of NACE SP0200. This standard recommends using a corrosion-inhibiting gel filler that transforms from the viscosity of water to a high-viscosity gel, providing effective sealing and corrosion protection. However, concerns exist regarding the potential loss of the inhibitor filler during its application. While some operators opt for pneumatic pressure tests instead of hydrotests to minimize contamination and reduce costs, the rapid loss of pressure in a pneumatic test does not equate to a rapid loss of corrosion inhibitor gel. To address this concern, a custom-designed pressure chamber was employed to simulate casing defects ranging from 5 to 13 mm in the worst-case scenario (6 o'clock position). Corrosion inhibitor gel filler was injected into the chamber and then pressurized to a maximum of 20 psia (~1.4 bar). The pressure was released through the different simulated defects and the corrosion inhibitor filler loss was recorded. The study revealed that inhibitor retention remained satisfactory. In the worst-case scenario, the maximum loss of corrosion inhibitor gel filler recorded was approximately 1 to 5% of the injected solution.
