The design of the PortMiami Tunnel (PMT) utilizes segmental reinforced concrete lining panels. Early corrosion initiation is expected to be mitigated by the specification of low permeability ternary-blend concrete and minimum three-inch clear cover, but there is uncertainty in the long-term corrosion and materials durability (particularly considering its ambitious 150 year design life) and uncertainty of the extent of possible loss of concrete integrity of the structure at extended times. Therefore, interest lies in continual long term corrosion monitoring of the tunnel panels. The objectives of this testing program are to provide information on the panels that may indicate possible early corrosion development in key areas of the tunnel and to provide field data to supplement laboratory testing to provide recommendations for best practices addressing corrosion prevention and mitigation for submerged structures. The findings from corrosion monitoring for over 10 years of service are presented.

In the construction of a 400 km gas pipeline system, thirty (30) pipe strings (approximately 26 km) were exposed to atmospheric conditions and rain flooded for 1-2 years. The pipe is 56”, uncoated carbon steel. Prior to their application in gas pipeline construction, the inspection detected uniform internal corrosion in some strings, but no signs of pitting corrosion were observed.

Aging pipeline assets are a concern for many pipeline operators. As pipelines age, external corrosion control becomes more challenging and often results in more aggressive monitoring and maintenance activities such as more frequent in-line inspections (ILI) and direct examinations. A pipeline case study is discussed demonstrating how a digital twin based on mechanistic modeling was utilized as a proof of concept for identifying possible cathodic protection remedial actions to decrease external corrosion growth rates (CGR) with the goal of extending the ILI inspection interval from 3 to 5 years. Various remediations such as adjusting or adding cathodic protection and resolving interference are modeled and compared with the existing corrosion control configuration. An economic analysis is included to determine if theoretical remediations can reduce monitoring and maintenance costs while maintaining asset integrity.

Austenitic stainless steels are widely used in refineries and petrochemical industries due to their good combination of properties such as workability, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. However, one of the most important problems they show, and which can lead to failures in service, is the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC). When these materials are subjected to temperatures in the range from 500 ºC to 800 °C, the precipitation of chromium-rich carbides occurs preferentially at grain boundaries (GB).

Corrosion of pipelines made of carbon steel and exposed to wet hydrocarbons containing CO2 and H2S is a common but serious problem encountered in petroleum industry and its occurrence causes enormousexpense due to production downtime, accidental injuries, and replacement costs. Control and prevent corrosion using chemical treatment (e.g. corrosion inhibitor injection) is one of the most cost-effective solutions and commonly practiced methods to prevent corrosion failures in pipelines in oil and gas industry. Generally speaking, the active corrosion inhibitor (CI) components in commercial CI packages are usually organic, nitrogen-based surfactants such as amines, imidazoline and its derivatives. Due to the amphiphilic nature of surfactants, a good fraction of the injected CI will inevitably go into the oil phase through partitioning and to the oil/water interface.
