Precipitation Hardened (PH) Ni-based alloys have proved to be sensitive to HydrogenInduced Stress Cracking (HISC) and HISC related failures in the Oil and Gas industry havebeen experienced in the case of UNS N07718 UNS N07725 and UNS N07716.Slow Strain Rate Tensile (SSRT) tests conducted under cathodic polarization gaveencouraging results as a means to evaluate HISC resistance when applied to UNS N07718better enabling the discrimination of acceptable and unacceptable microstructures as accordingto API 6A CRA. As a consequence an extensive test program was launched on several PH Nigrades a program both initiated and sponsored by 7(8) Oil & Gas Companies. The main objectives of this program were to develop a test method to allow for the evaluation of HISC resistance inorder to rank materials and possibly define acceptance criteria for each material and alsoto better understand the relationship between microstructure and HISC resistance. Twenty-eightindustrial Heats of PH Ni Alloys of eight material grades were fully characterized(microstructure mechanical properties) and evaluated using the SSRT test method underapplied cathodic polarization. The yield strength of the materials tested was in the range120 to 160 ksi. The quantitative susceptibility of the materials to HISC was established using the plastic elongation epCP and the plastic elongation ratio epCP/ epinert. Test results showed that some PH Alloys that exhibited acceptable microstructures in accordance with API 6ACRA did not necessarily exhibit high plastic elongation ratios. The need to implement HISC related tests in the selection of PH Ni base alloys for Oil and Gas applications is indicated.

Cementitious repair mortars are commonly used to rehabilitate deteriorated wastewater concrete infrastructure prior to the application of high-performance lining systems. Commonly such repair mortars receive a broom finish creating a “profiled” surface prior to the application of a spray applied protective lining system. Other recommendations require that that the cementitious mortars receive a blasted (mechanically profiled) surface to impart a mechanical profile prior to top coating with a similar lining system. In the following paper the authors summarize the results of an investigation to quantitatively assess adhesion of a protective lining when applied to a broom finish surface verses a blasted surface.

Key elements of a technology initiative aimed at developing high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) assessment methodologies for equipment and piping operating in hot hydrogen service are presented. Two assessment methodologies have been developed: (1) a Screening Assessment and (2) an Advanced Assessment both of which predict the development of HTHA damage with time. The HTHA assessment methodologies utilize fitness-for-service (FFS) frameworks and are in good agreement with reported HTHA incidents in API 941RP and API 941TR for carbon steel and C-0.5Mo materials. The Screening Assessment provides an improved decision basis by classifying and ranking equipment operating in hot hydrogen service which are tied to recommended action and levels of concern. Additionally the use of inspection findings as a means of risk mitigation and guidance on inspection interval decisions are also discussed. Select case studies are used to illustrate the advantages of the proposed methods. The developed methodologies provide an improved link between HTHA damage assessment and progression inspection and detection limits damage tolerance and operation severity.

South Ghawar Producing Department has exerted substantial efforts towards executing a seldom project of replacing numbers of extraordinary vessels. Those horizontal vessels were recommended for replacement due to major and excessive Step Wise Cracking, irregular blister and inclusions identified in several traps. These vessels are subject to Hydrogen Induced Cracking, known as HIC and this is mainly SGPD facilities were constructed on old time where SAES was not mandating to utilize HIC resistance material. In 2014, a company wide survey started and as a result 27 out of 121 were identified with HIC damage. To overcome these challenges, SGPD developed a robust action plan, which consists of two parts:
● Long Term Plan which is replacing the impacted vessels with upgraded material “HIC resistance material”
● Short Term Plan to continue the safe and reliable operation of impacted vessels until the vessels are replaced by managing and monitoring HIC growth.
With the short and long term action plan, SGPD controlled HIC concern in affected vessels. But we didn’t want to stop here and we wanted to go the extra mile and add a proactive measure rather than only reactive. Therefore, we partnered with R&DC to implement a proactive initiative at SGPD as the first department in Saudi Aramco called Step-Wise Hydrogen Induced Cracking Toolkit which falls under IR.4.0.

The Alloy UNS(1) N07718 is among the most used alloys in the oil and gas industry. Due to the presence of the alloying elements niobium, aluminum and titanium, this alloy is precipitation hardenable by the formation of the phases Gamma’ and Gamma’’. Although presenting excellent strength properties and good resistance in sour gas applications, this material is known to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement and most field failures are related to this limiting property.

The use of Alloy 718 (UNS N07718) for oil & gas applications is regulated by the API(2) 6ACRA1 standard and it is available in three different grades, the 120K, with minimum 120 ksi yield strength, the 140K, with minimum 140 ksi yield strength, and the 150K, with minimum 150 ksi yield strength. Previous studies showed that, due to the different hardening heat treatment parameters, each of the available grades presents a different precipitation behavior in terms of distribution and amount of precipitates, and the obtained microstructure is directly related to the resistance of the material to hydrogen embrittlement.

The fire water system on an offshore facility is a critical system. In the event of a fire, this system must not only deliver water for active fire management, but the system must also survive the worst-case scenarios of blast, jet fire and or hydrocarbon fire and for a duration anticipated in that scenario. The fire water system must also survive the duration of time needed for the safe evacuation of personnel from the facility.
This paper addresses the complexities involved in the use of composite pipes for fire water applications. It focuses on how blast effects are managed and the survivability of GRE piping in highly intense and high heat flux fire cases. Results from tests simulations will be shared which were carried out to assure certifying body, operator and engineer that GRE piping is the right material of choice for this application under such circumstances.
The paper concludes with examples of several floating production and storage offloading facilities installed with GRE piping for the fire water application.

The accurate and precise analysis of scale inhibitors plays an important role in making key decisions on the efficiency of scale squeeze and continuous-chemical injection treatments. At present, several techniques exist for scale inhibitor analysis, but each method has its own limitations and tedious analysis process. In addition, these methods often give results of either total chemical content or elemental analysis without details of chemical speciation. Especially for phosphonate scale inhibitors, it is well known that there is no analytical methods available on the market to differentiate different species of phosphonate inhibitors, which impedes the applications of different types of phosphonate inhibitors on the scale treatment. There was therefore a need for a next-generation method for phosphonate analysis. An experimental methodology has been developed based upon the use of gold nanoparticles to enhance chemical signatures of scale inhibitors in brines using Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). This methodology enables speciation and measurement at low concentrations in the range of 1 to 100 mg/L (ppm). This study used two different phosphonate-type scale inhibitors, and initial laboratory results prove that this novel technology can help to differentiate between two different phosphonate-based chemicals.

It is nowadays becoming increasingly common for new onshore structures and electrification systems to be installed in close vicinity to existing underground pipelines already equipped with their own CP and earthing systems. The problem with sharing common right of way between different structures is that their different earthing and CP systems are likely to interfere with each other. The coupling may reduce the performance of the individual designs or lead to major problems such as stray currents or shielding effects. Numerical modelling of these types of scenarios allows identifying such problems in advance, gaining understanding on the nature of the interference, and evaluating possible mitigation strategies. In this work the impact of constructing a solar power station across a set of transmission pipelines is investigated. The pipelines are protected by an ICCP system. The solar array includes galvanized piles and copper earthing system. The territory is mainly composed of clays or muds with flat and slightly undulating shapes with average resistivities in the order of 900 O-cm. Simulation results are presented showing the status of the pipelines before and after the solar array is constructed, as well as the solar array considering that the pipeline does not exist. The results show that the solar array piles and earthing system have measurable effects on the CP potentials on the pipeline.

Existing US Navy Coefficient of Friction (CoF) meters are insensitive and cannot differentiate surfaces which have obvious differences in nonskid CoF. A new CoF meter, the m-Deck, was evaluated to determine CoF measurement effectiveness and temperature sensitivity. Both laboratory and field testing were performed over various nonskid systems at numerous temperatures. The results indicate that the m-Deck has significant temperature dependence, but also a high degree of accuracy. The collected data is used to establish acceptance criteria for newly installed nonskid.

Pull-off adhesion testing is widely used to assess the protective coating process. It is also used to determine if a coating is fit for service in new construction and for repairs to existing structures. The result is often critical to the acceptance or rejection of a coating process, as the adhesion value quoted by the paint manufacturer can be adversely affected by aspects of the coating process. Low adhesion values are indicative of premature failure of the coating and are often due to inadequate surface preparation of the substrate.

Coating of the internal surface with a ceramic layer is useful for preventing the formation of deposits and extending the lifetime of the tubes, preventing the economic and operational issues derived from the carbon deposition on the surface of stainless steel tubes in the chemical industry. The thermal degradation of dimethyl ether (DME) at 700 ºC has been used as reaction test to compare the carbon deposition on standard and coated tubes. The results indicate an outstanding decrease in the amount of deposited carbon on the coated tubes, as well as the possibility of operating at longer times since the carbon deposits are only formed at the very beginning of the tests. The reversibility of the formation and combustion of the carbon deposits is proved for the coated tube, so that reproducible results have been attained in different cycles, which is not possible with a conventional uncoated stainless-steel tube.
