Additive manufacturing and 3D printing hold a number of promise in bringing on-demand and high-performance parts production that is capable of adding high value to the oil and gas industry. Non-metallic parts offer a number of advantages in reducing corrosion issues and enabling properties such as high-temperature resistance or reversibly dissolvable or degradable properties. However most parts used for completion and down-hole tools are still based on traditional molding extrusion thermoforming etc. methods. 3D printing methods (FDM SLA SLA VSP etc). holds promise in being able to fabricate parts ranging from high-performance polymer materials (PEEK PPS Ultem etc. ) and elastomeric (thermoset and thermoplastic) materials. The use of polymer nanocomposite polymers is also a possibility. This talk will give an overview of the 3D printing of polymer materials from high-performance polymers elastomers and nanocomposite materials currently being fabricated in the Advincula Research group. This will also enumerate their testing for thermo-mechanical properties including possible new protocols for evaluating their performance for downhole conditions environmental exposure and degradation properties.

In the petroleum industry, much greater attention has been focused on more highly sour and acidic oil resources due to the gradual depletion of conventional sweet oil resources. In addition, reducing crude oil costs have forced to look for opportunity (alternate) crudes, usually low-quality corrosive crude oils with high concentrations of naphthenic acids and sulfur compounds.1 The main constituents in the crude that cause corrosion are sulfur compounds, organic and inorganic chlorides, salt water, organic and inorganic acids. Processing of these highly acidic and sulfur-containing crudes at high temperatures in refineries has promoted significant corrosion problem in hot oil distillation units and associated piping systems.

Polybenzoxazine chemistry and polymerization have enjoyed tremendous growth due to its versatility in chemistry and a number of advantages in properties for high-temperature applications compared to epoxy PU PF resins. This is due to a wide variety of monomers and telechelic structures that can be incorporated in one-pot reactions and curing. We have widely reported the preparation of nanostructured polybenzoxazine (PBZ) nanocomposites prepared with nanoclay nano-silica and graphene to obtain very robust and superhydrophobic coatings that have resulted in efficient anti-corrosion properties and oil-water separators including anti-icing properties. The monomers are prepared by simpler chemistry enabling additives and other preparation protocols that lead to robust coatings. The addition of telechelic polybutadiene and the use of polyaniline as part of the interpenetrating network (IPN) and semi-interpenetrating network (SIPN) composition results in robust and very conformal coating compositions. In addition we have investigated PBZ-Epoxy copolymer compositions which are highly compatible with commercial formulations. Excellent adhesion properties to substrates even at higher temperature (HT) operations may enable these type of materials to be applied in more demanding conditions for the upstream midstream and downstream application in the oil and gas industries.

The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion resistance performance and requirements of AM biomedical implants as well as to characterize the corrosion behavior of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel in simulated physiological environment. The corrosion performance and mechanical properties of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel material in simulated physiological environment was studied. In the efforts of improving the reliability of Additive Manufactured biomedical devices, this research focuses on studying the corrosion, microstructural and mechanical properties of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel. It evaluates corrosion resistance through characterizing the corrosion behavior using cyclic anodic polarization tests in simulated physiological environment. In this experiment, the properties of 316L stainless steel parts manufactured using Selective Laser Melting SLM technique have been studied. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization test indicated that additive manufactured materials had slightly lower corrosion resistance than the casted stainless steel parts of the same grade. This was evident by the difficulty of regenerating a stable and protective passive oxide layer at room temperature as well as the instability of passivation at higher temperatures. Moreover, the additive manufactured samples showed a higher yield strength than the casted samples but lower values for elongation and ultimate tensile stress.
