Safe transportation of CO2 for carbon capture and storage requires strict control of contaminants in the captured CO2, so that corrosion and particulate matter problems are avoided. The present work tested two almost similar CO2 specifications for chemical reactions and liquid or solid drop-out. The tests were carried out with CO2 in liquid and gaseous state, at field-relevant pressure and temperatures. It was shown that the NO2 content had a strong effect on chemical reactions and tendency to drop-out, but the threshold was different depending on the physical state of the CO2. Presence of NO2 resulted in chemical reactions. Drop-outs were observed for 3 ppm-mol NO2 in the liquid state (+4°C, 100 bar) and for 8 ppm-mol in the gaseous state ( -3°C, 25 bar).

Drag Reducing Agents (DRA) usage in liquid petroleum pipelines has increased over the past few decades, as they improve the mechanical efficiency of flow systems, but their potential impact on different aspects affecting corrosion management has not been fully evaluated. This study investigates the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) partial pressure on the rate of formation and the protective characteristics of iron carbonate (FeCO3) corrosion product layers on X65 carbon steel in aqueous systems. Autoclave corrosion tests were performed at 80 °C in CO2-saturated 3 wt.% sodium chloride solution at partial pressures from 5.5 to 15.5 bar. Linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy electrochemical methods were utilized to provide insight into the stages of corrosion product layer development. Analysis of the electrochemical response under each condition revealed key, distinguishable stages associated with the development of an FeCO3 layer as its role transitions from predominantly blocking steel active sites, to ultimately providing additional corrosion suppression through formation of a diffusion barrier. It was found that at higher CO2 partial pressures, the onset of diffusion control was accelerated, but the overall corrosion rate was greater than at lower pressures.

CO2 corrosion mitigation is a challenge in the oil and gas industry. In order to decrease the severity of CO2 corrosion of carbon steel pipelines and equipment different mitigation practices are recommended. One such strategy is the application of surface active chemical inhibitors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inhibition effectiveness of thioglycolic acid 2-mercaptoethanol and decanethiol in a CO2-saturated aqueous electrolyte (1 wt.% NaCl). The inhibition properties of corrosion inhibitor were evaluated by electrochemical measurements (linear polarization resistance (LPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)) and the steel surface characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition surface characterization of adsorbed decanethiol molecules on carbon steel was performed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained data show that decanethiol successfully prevents corrosion of carbon steels in a CO2 environment. An inhibition mechanism was also proposed based on adsorption characteristics and film formation.

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is a critical challenge that affects the integrity of assets for which the oil and gas industry is not immune. Over the last few decades, both downstream and upstream industry segments have recognized the magnitude of CUI and challenges faced by the industry in its ability to handle CUI risk-based assessment, predictive detection and inspection of CUI. It is a concern that is hidden, invisible to inspectors and prompted mainly by moisture ingress between the insulation and the metallic pipe surface. The industry faces significant issues in the inspection of insulated assets, not only of pipes, but also tanks and vessels in terms of detection accuracy and precision. Currently, there is no reliable NDT detection tool that can predict the CUI spots in a safe and fast manner. In this study, a cyber physical-based approach is being presented to identify susceptible locations of CUI through a collection of infrared data overtime. The experimental results and data analysis demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing machine-learning techniques coupled with thermography to predict areas of concern. This is through a simplified clustering and classification model utilizing the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). This is a unique and innovative inspection technique in tackling complex challenges within the oil and gas industry, utilizing trending technologies such as big data analytics and artificial intelligence.
