Most of atmospheric coatings and tank linings for offshore maintenance are routinely applied on rusted steel after dry abrasive blasting. It is well known that the salt contamination on rusted steels cannot be completely removed by dry abrasive blasting alone. Residual salt contamination, which is hidden in the corrosion pits, is difficult to remove mechanically. Depending on the rust severity, the residual salt content on the dry abrasive blasted steel surface can be in the range of 5-65 μg/cm². Too much residual salt contamination can be detrimental to coating performance. It could cause coating blistering, adhesion degradation, and under film corrosion which will result in a shorter service life, particularly in immersion service such as pipeline coatings or tank linings. Recently wet abrasive blasting (WAB) has been used as the surface preparation in conjunction with the decontamination chemicals.

Past HF alkylation operation experience and several industry research projects have reported that the carbon steel corrosion rate in HF acid is strongly affected by the residual elements (RE) content (Cu Ni and Cr). Low RE carbon steel has been recommended for new construction of carbon steel equipment and piping in main acid service trace acid service and dilute HF service in API 751.However one aspect that is often overlooked is the effect of the local concentration of HF acid on low RE steel. At low concentrations low RE carbon steel can be subject to preferential corrosion when it is coupled with high RE carbon steel. Normally only the bulk HF concentration in a process stream is available. It is challenging to determine the actual local HF acid concentration in a practical manner. This paper discusses the possible variations of HF acid concentration in typical HF alkylation processing systems and the corresponding effects of RE on HF corrosion. Possible electrochemical mechanisms of RE on HF corrosion are also studied. Several RE related preferential HF corrosion cases reported in the past have also been reevaluated from the HF acid concentration point of view. Evaluation of actual local HF acid concentration is strongly recommended when low RE carbon steel is applied. This can be more critical to the modified HF alkylation process which utilizes modified HF with a lower volatility and can have different HF concentration in the fractionation section.

A coupled hydrogen diffusion and elastic-plastic deformation finite element analysis tool was developed. The tool was used to analyze the actual hydrogen diffusion process in a notched OCTG pipe in a H2S sour environment under internal pressure loading. It was found that hydrogen generated through the chemical reaction between H2S and metal surface eventually diffuse and concentered at the pipe notch tip due to the stress concertation and local plasticity under internal pressure. The pipe starts to crack under a critical stress level with certain hydrogen concentration that can be calculated from fracture mechanics formulas. This analysis tool can be used to investigate SSC cracking mechanism of a pipe under various loading condition and sour environments. It can also be used as a fitness-for-service casing design toolfor sour wells.

Storage tanks are the primary means for storing large volumes of liquids and gaseous products. Metal
loss from internal and external corrosion can reduce the service life of a tank. It is important to maintain
the integrity of steel storage tanks for safety, economic, and environmental reasons.
Saudi Aramco implemented three different scenarios of cathodic protection (CP) during bottom plate
replacement for three typical tanks. The tanks’ bottom plates were replaced based on thickness
measurements and visual inspection that revealed severe corrosion from soil. The main reason for
such corrosion was due to the asphalt layer underneath the tank. It was considered during the
replacement of the bottom plate to provide a reliable external (CP) and leak detection system. The
purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the experience gained from executing CP upgrades, and to
provide the best option to ensure integrity, cost saving and fewer shutdown periods.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (“PHMSA”) recently released the final rule known as the “Mega Rule” which includes a set of regulations designed to improve pipeline safety by reducing the frequency of pipeline failures. The intent of the rule is to address lessons learned following the Pacific Gas and Electric Company rupture and release in San Bruno, California, in September 2010. On September 9, 2010, a natural gas pipeline owned by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) exploded in San Bruno, CA. creating a fire that killed eight people, destroyed more than 100 homes and cost $2.8 billion. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found that PG&E had a faulty integrity management (IM) system that failed to detect a defective section of the pipeline resulting in the devastating explosion. The PG&E incident spurred action from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to revise the existing Federal Pipeline Safety Regulations (FPSR) to improve the safety of onshore gas transmission pipelines. These revisions are known as the Mega Rule. This final rule responds to the incident by extending existing design, operational and maintenance, and reporting requirements under the Federal Pipeline Safety Regulations to onshore natural gas transmission pipelines and gathering pipelines in rural areas. The Mega Rule is a sweeping set of regulations comprised of three parts: • Part 1 focuses on the safety of gas transmission pipelines. • Part 2 introduces new guidelines about IM, updated requirements for high consequence areas (HCAs) and expectations for operators following extreme weather events and natural disasters. • Part 3 expands certain safety requirements to all onshore gas gathering pipelines.

Reinforced concrete towers in a water reservoir contain gates and the equipment to control the water entering the system. Any interruption in the operation of these towers may cause a huge disruption in the municipal water distribution system. Continuous operation in an aggressive environment often contributes to corrosion of aging water infrastructure. A failure due to corrosion would necessitate extensive repair or replacement costs and unacceptable system downtime. This paper presents a case study focused on a comprehensive condition assessment and corrosion mitigation of an aged forebay outlet tower in Southern California. The inspected tower - in operation since 1941 - is a crucial structure in a water distribution system serving most of the 19 million people in Southern California. The tower illustrated significant concrete deterioration and corrosion of the reinforcement above the operating water surface elevation. An impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system was designed and installed on the tower to extend the life of the structure. Field activities and ICCP installation were dictated by restricted shutdown schedules and operational constraints. The paper addresses the methodology for condition assessment and cathodic protection design as well as challenges encountered due to schedule/operational constraints.
