The composition of corrosion inhibitors used in the Oil and Gas industry are predominantly based on multiple components. It is highly desired that all the components present in a corrosion inhibitor will interact synergistically. Synergistic corrosion inhibitor mixtures will improve performance and reduce the minimum effective inhibitor concentration, which is key particularly for subsea applications. Additionally, subsea applications in the North Sea, the Norwegian shelf and other areas of the world require corrosion inhibitors to follow strict environmental regulations. In this work, the application of molecular modeling by using the frontier orbital principle for the screening and selection of prospective green multicomponent corrosion inhibitors is reported. It is also shown how this quantum-chemistry based approach can expedite corrosion inhibitor development.

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is gaining greater importance in the industry transition to meet climate goals reducing carbon intensity. As the source of CO2 captured for sequestration widens to many more applications from oil and gas productions, power plants, refineries, chemical plants, steel manufacturing and other industries, the composition of the captured gas stream for sequestration sees various components. Some of the common impurities particularly from combustion processes are carbon monoxide, oxygen, SOx, NOx and others. Understanding the effect of presence of the various chemical species on material limits and maximum tolerance limits are crucial for safe operations of the assets. In one of the recent projects, there was a presence of CO in the CO2 stream, and it was imperative to identify the effect of this on the existing carbon steel pipeline. The pipeline was of X65 steel and fabricated for natural gas transmission. Wet CO-CO2 cracking is a reported degradation mode particularly as the CO concentration increases beyond 200 ppm in the gas phase or at partial pressures above 0.3 bar. This study is a combination of literature review of current state of art with respect to CO-CO2 cracking in carbon steel in presence of impurities and laboratory testing of welded X65 specimens exposed to CO concentration in dense (liquid) phase up to 1000 ppm and also in the presence of small concentrations of oxygen that also replicates some of the expected conditions in the project. The tests clearly indicate that the risk of CO-CO2 cracking is not significant up to the concentrations tested.

Severe corrosion and cracking problems in Amine units and associated plants have been documented extensively. Mitigating these issues has had a significant economic impact in the oil and gas refining industries where this equipment is used to capture acid gases, such as CO2 and H2S. Currently, expensive austenitic stainless steels and other corrosion resistant alloys are being utilised to control these corrosion issues with varying degrees of success.
In this paper, the use of advanced cold applied liquid coatings, as an alternative solution to expensive alloys, are examined. In particular, the performance of a specific coating is considered (under a rigorous testing regime) in environments containing the amines MDEA and DGA with combinations of sour gases. The permeation properties of the coating were also examined by conducting a six month cold wall test using demineralised water at 150oC. It is found that this coating offers excellent resistance even when the testing environment respectively contains 38.8% H2S at a temperature and pressure of 150oC and 1000psi. Finally, some case studies are discussed which provide verification to the experimental results obtained.

Sulfur and acidic impurities in crude oils pose serious hot oil corrosion problems in crude distillation units (CDU) and associated vacuum distillation units (VDU), especially with the increase in processing of lowquality, opportunity crudes.1-4   In the range of 200-400˚C, reactive sulfur compounds cause sulfidation corrosion of ferritic carbon and chrome steels in CDU, VDU, and front ends of downstream units operating at hot oil temperatures.5-7 Over the same temperature range, naturally occurring carboxylic acids in crudes can be so aggressive that higher alloy, austenitic stainless steels containing >2.5% Mo are required for processing high acid oils.8-11  Although sulfidation and acid corrosion occur over the same temperature range, they differ in two significant ways.  Sulfidation forms an iron sulfide solid that is semiresistant to further corrosion and relatively insensitive to flow velocity.  Acids form oil soluble organic salts that can be washed away especially in areas of high turbulence.12-14

Organic corrosion inhibitors (CI) have widespread use in the crude oil refining industry for corrosion protection and mitigation.1 An effective corrosion inhibitor is a chemical substance that is applied in low concentration into a stream which suppresses or mitigates a corrosion mechanism.,2,3,4 Inhibitors can be classified into two classes: adsorption or film-forming with organic inhibitors falling under the adsorption class. In this type of inhibitor a self-assembled structure is formed, where an array of hydrocarbon tails extend away from the metal surface and the polar groups (e.g., N in amines) chemisorb onto the metal surface.2 Over the years, certain classes of inhibitors have been established as industry standards to confront specific corrosion mechanisms encountered throughout the refinery process. Examples include, filming and neutralizing amines used in crude units to combat aqueous corrosion; polysulfides used in FCCU to combat hydrogen blistering, cracking and embrittlement; P-based chemistries to combat naphthenic acid corrosion.5

This paper presents corrosion test results of candidate alloys for balance-of-plant (BoP) at the hydrogen side in alkaline water electrolyzers. Experiments were carried out at industrially relevant conditions, i.e. 60-80 °C in 25 wt% KOH solutions at H2 pressures ranging from 1 bar (cf. atmospheric units) to 15 bar (cf. pressurized units). Materials tested were nickel base alloy UNS N06625, austenitic stainless steel UNS S31603, super duplex UNS S327X0 and carbon steel UNS K03014. Mass loss corrosion and localized corrosion based on surface profilometry were used to evaluate materials performance. Corrosion scales were characterized using XRD.
