High Voltage Holiday Detectors are commonly used to locate pinholes in coatings by generating a spark when an electrode passes over an area of bare substrate. Pinholes and areas of a non-continuous coating film can provide a direct path for premature failure of the coated asset. Historically a rule of thumb across the coating industry had been to utilize 100 volts per mil of coating as the recommended voltage setting for holiday detection. A paper presented at a recent AMPP conference1 provided compelling evidence, and confirmed industry suspicions, that the rule of thumb and test voltages specified by nearly every published standard were inadequate to reliably detect all holidays. In response, industry stakeholders worked to build consensus and update the relevant standards with science-based and experimentally-proven specifications that help ensure High Voltage Holiday Detectors are used appropriately, and with the correct voltage settings, to reliably detect holidays. This paper provides a review of these updates.

Combining RMU, Annual Survey, and Groundbed System Design Data to Predict Capital Replacement Needs

We present a procedure to estimate the remaining service life of an impressed current groundbed using data analytics techniques to combine the various manually and remotely collected measurements, and rectifier groundbed metadata. Multiple data sources, including commissioning data, annual survey data, remote monitoring data were combined to create a consolidated dataset spanning over ten years for each impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) rectifier groundbed. Using advanced analytics algorithms applied to ICCP rectifier groundbed sites, weighting factors have been calculated to determine the influence of each dataset on the estimated groundbed remaining service life. This work builds on previous presentations at AMPP Corrosion 2021 and 2022, where seasonality and historic trends in rectifier resistance measurements were modelled. By including additional datasets describing the location at the time of installation and the historic survey measurements, a more robust prediction can be made.

The transition of pulsed laser ablation (PLA) technology into the hands of maintainers within shipyards and the transportation industry requires an assessment of multiple factors. From the technical perspective relative to surface preparation and corrosion mitigation, it is essential to understand the impact of PLA energy into substrates and the resultant adhesion characteristics of subsequent coatings. Technical areas to be discussed include metallurgical properties, such as stress corrosion cracking, weldability, bulk properties, fatigue life, as well as adhesion. The effective application of laser ablation is of critical concern to preservation professionals, which requires an understanding of how the process works, the proper appearance of a laser ablated surface, whether that is a tightly adhered existing coating prepared for re-coating, or to expose some or all of the base metal substrate. Accordingly, both laser operators and inspectors need specific information and training to appropriately use the technology to meet preservation objectives and requirements. These needs will be addressed through a forthcoming AMPP Laser Ablation Standard, Technical Guide, and Visual Guide. Determining where to apply PLA based on extensive test data currently available, as well as understanding where future investigation is required, will be summarized.

Due to the serious consequences of external corrosion and leaks in underground pipelines, external corrosion direct assessment, as described in AMPP SP0502, was developed to proactively prevent external corrosion and ensure the integrity of oil and gas pipelines that are difficult to pig. This standard requires a minimum of two indirect inspections to confirm the most susceptible locations on a pipeline for external corrosion to occur. Cathodic protection, coating and soil resistivity are collected during the indirect inspection process to help classify and prioritize anomalies for direct examination. This is also applicable during stress corrosion cracking direct assessment, where indirect inspection data are supplemented with other data to help pinpoint susceptible locations. All these techniques are not capable of identifying external metal loss or external stress corrosion cracks from aboveground; the pipeline must be exposed for the defects to be evaluated. The invention of the non-contact magnetic gradient tomography method has elevated DA protocols. This technology can use magnetic field strength from aboveground to identify external metal loss, cracks, dents, etc. This paper presents process improvements and real-life case studies demonstrating the benefits of this technology on non-piggable pipelines.

Effectiveness of Vapor Corrosion Inhibitors under Bacterial Activity for Aboveground Storage Tank Application

Bacterial activity is known to influence corrosion and can result in increasing soil-side corrosion of the aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) floor plates. Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) defines this phenomenon as Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC). It has been hypothesized that vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) can not only function in presence of bacterial activity but can also function as biocides. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of bacterial activity on corrosion in the sand pad conditions and effect of VCIs in mitigating MIC. Various bacteria cultures were grown using commercially available culture media, and coupon exposure tests were performed with field sand mixed with the culture media. To this end, control and VCI-dosed electrolytes were prepared using the field sand plus bacteria cultures. Pre- and post-test bacteria concentration estimation and measurements, respectively, in the VCI-dosed electrolytes indicated that VCIs do not function as biocides, however, VCIs are highly effective for mitigating corrosion in presence of bacterial activity.

Understanding Alkalinity for Use in Corrosion Prediction

Parameters reported in production fluid water chemistry analyses are used by engineers for determination of scaling tendency and corrosivity, thus promoting optimal production rates while maintaining asset integrity. Water chemistry analysis documents report ion concentrations, total alkalinity, and various graphical data sets related to the tested brine which are designed to assist field engineers. The alkalinity value provided in these documents is of utmost importance to corrosion engineers as it is a measure of the capacity of an aqueous solution to resist changes in acidification. Alkalinity can also be directly linked to the in situ pH of the produced brine and can therefore provide key inputs to assess and predict its corrosivity. Yet, including alkalinity into corrosion production models can be challenging considering there is still much uncertainty among operators about the validity and meaning of the reported alkalinity value. For that reason, recent publications (two AMPP standards) have focused on providing additional guidelines to those who need this knowledge. This is of key importance for the optimization of appropriate and economic corrosion and scaling mitigation strategies. This paper will review the use of the alkalinity term and water chemistry analysis with goals of minimizing confusion and optimizing the use of proper data input for corrosion prediction models.

Testing Heavily Cold Formed 22Cr Duplex Stainless Steel Exposed to Liquid Mercury to Assess Liquid Metal Embrittlement Susceptibility

Existing literature suggests that while 22Cr may not be susceptible to Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) when exposed to mercury at typical engineering strains, heavily cold formed 22Cr materials may be susceptible. The LME susceptibility from mercury of cold formed UNS S31803 was tested using four-point bend, slow strain rate, and interrupted slow strain rate techniques, simulating a range of strains from primarily elastic deformation of as-produced / as-welded pipe to high plastic deformation of cold formed pipe. Specimens were selected from the base metal, the weld metal / heat affected zone, and from pre-strained material simulating cold forming. The testing was conducted in the presence of mercury (only) at both ambient temperature and 40 °C. The passive film was intentionally disrupted by scratching at the initiation of the tests. The results of this testing did not indicate evidence of LME for any of the material / environment conditions tested.
