Supercritical CO2 Corrosion in Production Casing Due to Contaminated Gas Lift

Pre-salt carbonate reservoirs in the Santos Basin are a challenge for offshore well design and
construction. Located under a salt layer of around 2000 m, they generate large amounts of carbon dioxide associated with oil and gas production. To avoid releasing millions of cubic meters of CO2 into the atmosphere, the gas is reinjected or used for artificial lift purposes, where its fraction can reach up to 80% of the total composition.

The purpose of this work is to describe the results of corrosion studies for production casing strings subjected to gas lift containing supercritical CO2 (SCCO2) in the pre-salt Brazilian fields. High pressure carbonate reservoirs usually demand CRA for well completions during production. Production casing string uses low alloy steel though, due to CRA high costs. Low alloy steel casings are subjected to sweet corrosion where the packer fluid is located. High corrosion rates are expected in that region. However, the semi-confined space of the annulus region between the production casing and tubing string, and the scale formed in the hot rolling process can significantly aid reducing the corrosive process. This paper shows the results of corrosion tests carried out considering the reduced volume-area ratio of the packer
fluid region, the production parameters, and the protective effect of the steel mill scale. The test methodology consisted in a quantitative analysis using laser interferometry and autoclaves with supercritical conditions and reduced volume-area ratio.
