Thick-film epoxy coating systems are applied at greater dry film thicknesses than conventional protective coating systems, resulting in a greater need for achieving the required level of surface preparation. They also must serve in corrosive and severe environmental conditions and must be capable to withstand hydrocarbon fire exposure and explosions. It is critical that the surface preparation be done in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions within the application manual. Otherwise, premature failure may occur, often within one year of being placed into service. Inadequate preparation may result in the system not being able to provide the level of fire protection required. Failure of the fireproofing system puts lives, assets, ability to continue operation, and the environment at risk!

Key words: surface preparation, surface cleanliness, surface profile, anchor profile, peak count density, fireproofing, passive fire protection, atmospheric corrosion, thick-film intumescent coating, hydrocarbon fire protection, galvanizing, inspection
