Marine environments can be very aggressive and present significant challenges in maintaining key infrastructure from the effects of corrosion.  In Florida, thousands of bridges are in coastal areas and are continually, or periodically exposed to saltwater conditions.  A clear majority of these bridges were constructed using steel reinforced concrete and are supported by precast pilings situated in saltwater, so for this reason, cathodic protection is a necessary strategy for controlling the effects of saltwater induced corrosion. 

Toward the early 1980s, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began the evaluation of different approaches to control saltwater induced corrosion.  Some of these included the use of integral pile jackets, specialty materials for concrete repairs, surface applied coatings and other innovative approaches utilizing galvanic anode technology.  One such system was jointly developed with industry partners and sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) using integral pile jackets lined with expanded zinc mesh anodes to apply cathodic protection. This innovative approach provides for the problem of concrete repair while at the same time stopping the on-going process of corrosion both combined in one application.  Both laboratory and field trials validated the benefits to this approach and confirmed that the system can mitigate corrosion and extend the useful service life of pilings by more than 20 years.

This paper describes the performance properties of coconut-based polyol resin used in polyurethane coating systems compared with commercially available polyurethane paints which use petroleum-based acrylic or polyester polyol resins, in terms of physical and corrosion properties under accelerated laboratory weather conditions. The studies also show the chemical resistance and protection properties from the discoloration effects of ultraviolet (UV) light on the painted metal test panel substrate specifically cold rolled steel.

Marine environments are highly corrosive to ships and other assets that are made out of steel. Novel field applicable PVDF coating solutions have been developed to provide immediate relief when used as top coating or over-coat over existing protective coatings. This field applicable, patent-pending PVDF corrosion protection coating technology have the following key attributes: 1) At 30-50µm thickness, the corrosion protection coating is 100x more efficient than 500µm (20mils) of epoxy coatings in blocking moisture and moisture-carrying dissolved salts and acidic gases. 2) At 70% PVDF in the coating, it has been proven to withstand direct UV exposure for more than 60 years. The patent-pending 100% PVDF corrosion protection coating is now available to further the longevity of corrosion protection when applied over the epoxy coating as over-coat protection. 3) The inherent hydrophobic property of the PVDF polymer is maintained in the patent-pending field applicable coating technology to provide antifouling protection for below seawater line naval and marine assets. As top coatings in protecting the underlying coating, these field applicable PVDF coatings not only to resist, but also block UV light from damaging the underlying UV vulnerable epoxy and polyurethane coatings.

The composite protective coating is the most widespread technology among various methods used in corrosion protection for the marine industry. Carbon-based materials are the most promising as anticorrosion pigments due to its mechanical strength chemical inertness non-cytotoxicity and very strong absorption of UV and visible light. In present study graphene oxide (GO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were investigated as addictive and also they were modified by nitrogen-doping. The samples of stainless steel (316L) coated by epoxy resin with carbon-based pigments were exposed to UV irradiation (340nm) for 1000h and corrosion behavior in 3.5 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution was investigated before and after UV degradation. Experimental results showed that corrosion current significantly decreased in presence of carbon-based materials especially nitrogen-doped ones in the composite coating. The degradation of the epoxy coating after UV exposure was retarded by the presence of the GO MWCNT and the nitrogen-doped pigments suggested that carbon-based nanomaterials may enhance the lifetime of composite coating. Finally a protection mechanism was built to explain the carbon-based nanomaterials improved corrosion resistance and effect of nitrogen-doping on the corrosion behavior.KEY WORDS: UV radiation composite coating corrosion graphene oxide multiwalled carbon nanotubes nitrogen doping
