This standard is not intended to provide the minimum requirements for offshore oil and gas platforms and other similar structures of the offshore oil and gas industry. This standard may be used to provide the minimum requirements for estuarine, paludal, riverine, great lake structures or similar. The Site-Applied Wrap Corrosion Protection Systems in accordance with this standard are considered suitable for further protection by means of cathodic protection.

Carbon and low-alloy steels in plate form and their welded products may be susceptible to one or more forms of environmental cracking when exposed to wet H₂S service conditions. These include, for example, (1) sulfide stress cracking (SSC) of hard zones and welds; (2) hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) in the parent metal; and (3) stress-oriented hydrogen-induced cracking (SOHIC) in the region adjacent to welds of nominally acceptable hardness. Extensive work has been conducted over many years to understand various fundamental and applied aspects of these phenomena. Experiences in refinery wet H₂S operations have directed particular attention to understanding SOHIC and the various metallurgical and environmental parameters that govern its occurrence.

Scope

This standard was prepared to provide a test method for consistent evaluation of pipeline and pressure vessel steels to SOHIC caused by hydrogen absorption from aqueous sulfide corrosion. The test conditions are not designed to simulate any specific service environment. The test is intended to evaluate resistance to SOHIC only, and not to other adverse effects of sour environments such as sulfide stress cracking (SSC), pitting, or mass loss from corrosion.

There are an estimated 900,000 electric utility steel transmission and distribution structures in North America alone. An increasing number of these structures are tubular steel poles. The degradation effects of corrosion can have a significant effect on the structural reliability of this important segment of our infrastructure. While the predictability of strength for a newly installed tubular steel pole is relatively easy to calculate, deterioration of these poles over time due to corrosion presents a different challenge to those calculations.

This standard is intended for use by electric utility personnel, contractors, inspectors, and those interested in the impact of corrosion on the needed strength capacity of a tubular steel pole structure used in transmission, distribution, and/or substation applications.

AMPP TR21540-2022, Correlating Qualitative Surface Profile Assessment Methods to Quantitative Methodology on Prepared Concrete Substrates

Coating/lining manufacturers and/or facility owners frequently specify cleaning and roughening of the concrete surface prior to product installation. The specifications may reference qualitative methods including visual assessments using comparison coupons or quantitative methods including surface profile depth measurements. However, prior to this Technical Report, there was no known data to inform a conversion between qualitative and quantitative methods. The outcomes of this Technical Report enable coating manufacturers, engineers, specifiers, and contractors to convert well-established qualitative methods to quantitative values based on an interlaboratory experiment. While current quantitative methods can measure up to 6 mm (250 mils), extremely rough concrete surfaces (exceeding ~1.5 mm, or ~50 mils) were not included in the experiment due to the inability to stabilize the instrument probe and obtain accurate data.

Critical Review of ISO 12944-9 and AMPP TM21612 Coating Qualification Standards Using Field Data to Compare

The most widely accepted international standards for the prequalification of offshore coatings are ISO 12944-9 and AMPP TM21612. The two laboratory test standards are trying to simulate the offshore service conditions, but the offshore regions around the world are in quite different environmental conditions which may be more or less severe than the laboratory test conditions. Thus, it is very likely to see poor correlation between the laboratory and the field results. However, it is essential that a reliable test standard duplicates the field major failure modes and generates a correct performance ranking among candidate coating systems. Therefore, facility owners can comfortably select proper coating systems and coating manufacturers can be guided to improve their coating formulations. Field exposure testing of three commercial coating systems applied on panels and placed in three different locations across the world was conducted. Testing of these same three commercial coating systems was also conducted in the laboratory using AMPP TM21612. Comparison testing was also done to compare the failure modes and rust creepage rates of constant salt fog testing (used in ASTM B117, and in one of the cycles in ISO 12944-9) versus wet/dry cyclic salt fog testing (used in one of the cycles in AMPP TM21612). In this paper a comparison is made between the test methods of these standards and correlation with the field test results.
