Steel pipe towers consisting of tubular steel pipes are one type of transmission towers. The internal corrosion of steel pipe beams is an issue because it is difficult to assess from the external appearance. At present such type of corrosion is mainly inspected by hammering and endoscope which cost time and money. Therefore prediction of the corrosion rate and its distribution inside steel pipe can contribute to the maintenance of steel pipe towers.In the previous work we reported the distribution of corrosion rate inside the steel pipe in the longitudinal direction which was evaluated using the method in which several atmospheric corrosion monitoring (ACM) sensors were installed in a steel pipe at the regular interval.In Japan most of transmission towers suffer corrosion due to sea salt because Japan is surrounded by ocean. Once sea salt deposited inside steel pipe corrosion can be accelerated because such salt can hardly be washed out by rain. Therefore the information about amount of sea salt deposited inside steel pipe and its distribution is required to estimate the corrosion rate of steel pipes for transmission tower.In this study the amount of deposited sea salt inside steel pipe exposed at coastal environment was investigated for longitudinal and circumferential direction. As a result it was revealed that sea salt deposited more at the end of pipe than the center. This result showed good agreement with the corrosion monitoring using ACM sensors installed into steel pipe and evaluation of corrosion rate by cross sectional observation of steel pipe after the test.
