The corrosion susceptibility of aluminium alloys in particular the propagation kinetics of intergranular corrosion remains not only a problem of fundamental interest but is also a key point for aircraft structures. The present work aims to understand and characterize local corrosion phenomena in order to develop and optimise an engineering test to determine the propagation kinetics of intergranular corrosion defects in a 2024-T351 aluminium alloy exposed to an aggressive environment with various exposure conditions (continuous immersion in a 1M NaCl solution during times ranging from 6h to 3000h cyclic corrosion tests natural environment exposure and industrial corrosion tests).Firstly in order to understand this local corrosion mechanism morphological and chemical characterizations of corrosion defects were done using several techniques such as TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction). Secondly tensile tests on pre-corroded specimens were performed to evaluate the residual mechanical properties of the specimens; the results from mechanical tests were correlated to the size of the corrosion defects themselves but also to the extent of a hydrogen volume damage at the tip of the corrosion defect. Additional fracture surface analyses and hydrogen content measurements were performed to better characterize the corrosion damage. Thirdly tensile tests and electrochemical characterizations on hydrogenated and pre-corroded specimens were also performed to understand the hydrogen influence on the corrosion defect propagation kinetics. To finish corrosion defects were generated and characterised on pre-stressed specimens to understand the influence of the stress on the corrosion defects propagation and to model the state of stresses at the corrosion tip. Results allowed to propose a various scales approach of the localised corrosion of the 2024 T351 aluminium alloy and an experimental methodology combining various techniques in order to try to control and predict propagation kinetics of intergranular corrosion defects. This work is supported by ANR-14-CE07-0027-01 – M-SCOT: Multi Scale COrrosion Testing.
