Insulation Driven Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking of Carbon Steel

Over the past decade, an increasing number of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) incidents have been observed on carbon steel assets operating in Alberta, Canada. At the time of publication, over 128 distinct cracks have been identified on 26 assets spanning at least 5 operators. All incidents have occurred on uncoated carbon steel operating between 70 °C and 190 °C and exposed to wet mineral wool insulation. Both piping and pressure vessels have been affected. Cracking has been isolated to assets with mineral wool insulation produced after 2003; however, a specific change to mineral wool composition in this timeframe has not been identified. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of incidents and investigations that have been reported to date and to update the environmental conditions (window of susceptibility) where insulation driven intergranular stress corrosion cracking has been observed. By drawing attention to this issue, it is the authors’ objective to increase awareness and determine if similar cracking incidents are occurring in other geographical regions.

UNS N06985 is a nickel-based alloy with additions of Mo, Cu and W. Because of its high strength and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), cold worked UNS N06985 has been extensively used for OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods). The SCC initiation has been studied in Cl-H₂S-CO₂ containing sour environments; and the SCC resistance was often evaluated using slow strain rate testing (SSRT) for screening by short-term testing and using tensile or C-ring for verification by long-term autoclave testing exposures¹. UNS N06985 showed high resistance to SCC at high temperatures in elemental sulfur containing environments with moderate chlorides².

Material Selection Methodology Using Halite Tendency Indicators for Gas Wells: A Case Study

In gas wells, where a low or unknown amount of the naturally occurring saline formation water is expected to be produced, tubing material selection relies on selecting a fixed dataset of input parameters and extrapolating to the entire well life. This is intended to represent the worst-case scenario; while this can be the case regarding pressure and temperature, the produced water composition as a function of time is less likely to be as reliable. This is because during production, gas can cause water evaporation, leading to a significant increase in the chloride ion concentration compared to the analyzed values – and hence, potentially an unsuitable material selected. To this end, it is important to: (a) ensure that the formation water composition analyzed is correct, (b) that this composition is reconciled to initial reservoir conditions and (c) calculate any evaporation/condensation effects in different sections of the well as a function of production forecasts. This makes it easier to establish operational envelopes that both prevent productivity impairment and provide appropriate thresholds of acceptability for the tubing material selected. This paper describes the methodology applied for tubing material selection for a high temperature-high pressure (HTHP) gas well in the North Sea.
