A Comparison of the Pitting and Crevice Corrosion of Directional Drilling Alloys With Oilfield Production Alloys

The pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion of oilfield production alloys (e.g., 13Cr/UNS S41000, 17-4PH/UNS S17400, 25Cr/UNS S32750, A286/UNS S66286, 718/UNS N07718) and proprietary austenitic stainless steels for directional drilling (PREN between ~20 to ~45) has been investigated. Specifically, series of electrochemical tests have been conducted to rank the alloys, establish simple correlations between electrochemical parameters, PRENmod, and 3-to-60-day immersion tests in 3.5% NaCl at ambient temperature. For all but one alloy, pitting was absent in stark contrast to crevices. Upon tracking populations and dimensional characteristics of crevices over time, trendlines comparing the susceptibility of the alloys towards crevice corrosion were established. Practical conclusions were reached, including the following: (1) 13Cr consistently developed crevices within days, (2) 17-4PH as well as all traditional directional drilling stainless steels developed crevices within one to five weeks, and, (3) neither 718, 25Cr, nor newer directional drilling alloys with both high nickel and high PRENmod showed any sign of crevices upon being tested up to 60 days. Through a variety of comparisons, this investigation also reveals useful technical directions for the development of new, economical, and fit-for-service Oil & Gas alloys for both production and drilling.

On March 2011 at Fukushima Daiichi NPS, seawater was injected into spent fuel pools just after the accident for emergency cooling. The temperature of the water in a pool raised up to 93 ℃, and the chloride ion concentration raised up to 1,944 ppm (maximum) after seawater injection. In this high temperature and high chloride ion concentration environment, localized corrosion including crevice corrosion may have occurred on components made of passive metals such as stainless steels. The environment is assumed to be susceptible to crevice corrosion for 304 SS based on laboratory experiments and the concept of ER, CREV. There is a low possibility of initiating localized corrosion after the water was purified and deoxygenated. However, it is not certain whether localized corrosion, once initiated and propagated under the severe condition, will repassivate after the bulk water is purified. It is necessary to examine the continuity of crevice corrosion propagation when the bulk water is purified and deaerated, which means the cathodic reactions outside the crevice will no longer contribute to the propagation of the corrosion.

Austenitic-ferritic stainless steels, commonly known as duplex stainless steels (DSSs), are a group of materials typically consisting of equal amounts austenite and ferrite. DSSs are well-known materials in chemical industry and are often a cost-effective alternative as they combine high mechanical strength and fatigue resistance with good corrosion properties. Contributing to the cost-effectiveness is the low nickel content compared to austenitic stainless steels. Advantages with DSSs are high chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance (SCC), where austenitic steels with moderate nickel content are inherently more sensitive. In combinations with carbon steel it can be a benefit to use DSSs since carbon steel and DSSs have matching thermal expansion.

UNS S31600 is usually selected for pipes to be applied under conditions where cleanliness is an essential factor. As the lines around Sulfate Removal Unit (SRU) have this requirement (considering the membranes sensibility to any debris), it is common to find this alloy as the preferred one in the material selection criteria for systems like this in Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSO) where the deaerator tower is upstream the SRU, with the role to limit the oxygen content up to 10 ppb in the seawater.

Although the selection of UNS S31600 agrees with ISO 21457 and NORSOK M-001 for this part of seawater treatment system (Figure 1), in 2019 several pits were noticed at pipes downstream the SRU in a FPSO being operated at Brazil Santos basin.
