This presentation - looks at the - process behind proposals, submittal practices, evaluation and value proposition of alternative protective coatings systems to conventional specified systems. Currently, there are many new coatings solutions and technologies that offer savings in time and dollars over older, though proven, technologies.
Pull-off adhesion testing of coatings is commonly used for product testing and qualification as well as quality control / quality assurance. However, initial adhesion values do not necessarily correlate with service life of coatings or their corrosion protection performance. Adhesion of several product chemistries to steel is examined in this study before and after immersion exposure. Results are presented within the context of laboratory corrosion testing in an effort to investigate the significance of adhesion testing in modern lining systems.

Coatings are widely used to mitigate corrosion of structural steel in aggressive humid environments. Zinc-rich primer three-coat paint systems are widely used to mitigate corrosion of steel bridges. However, the associated costs of its required maintenance are high. As part of a research program, chemically bonded phosphate ceramics (CBPC), thermal diffusion galvanizing (TDG) and metallizing coatings along with the current 3-coat systems were exposed in outdoor conditions for up to 2 years and in salt-fog exposure for up to 14,600 hours.

The coating of concrete floors is always challenging. Unlike walls, ceilings, tanks, bridges and other structures floors have vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This usually means that they are coated during off hours with tight schedules. Contractors need to plan the projects to meet the needs and schedules of owners. Often times this means multiple trips to the facility to review the scope of work and provide workable schedules. Required testing is generally performed prior to the scheduled start of work or after the floors are back in service.
