Dry film thickness (DFT) is an important parameter of coating application, and both low and high DFTs can result in coating failures. Typically, DFTs are measured in accordance with SSPC-PA 2, “Procedure for Determining Conformance to Dry Coating Thickness Requirements” (1), or other similar standards. Recent advancements in technology have resulted in DFT probes capable of achieving a higher rate of DFT data collection than previous devices.

As governments around the world seek to promote the adoption of lower-carbon fuels, credits are available for fuels which satisfy various low-carbon or renewable fuels standards. In the United States, the most common standards discussed include California’s Low Carbon Fuels Standard1 and the US EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard2. These standards define the acceptable methods (called pathways) for conversion of renewable feeds into consumer fuel products. In order for a producer to be eligible for credits, one of the acceptable pathways must be used. The most common pathway presently being used or considered by most facilities is hydrotreating.

This paper addresses two recent regulatory actions regarding lead. The first is the October 15, 2008 revision to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Lead. The second regulation is the August 14, 2008 update to the OSHA Instruction: National Emphasis Program – Lead, which describes OSHA’s nation-wide emphasis on reducing occupational lead exposures. The authors will overview the regulatory actions and discuss potential impacts on the painting industry.
Third-party paint inspection contracts provided an immediate, tangible benefit in supplying a qualified, certified coating inspector full-time to a painting project. Inspectors could be rapidly deployed and provided someone to the project with broad experience in painting projects; however, simply providing a third-party contract paint inspector to a project did not always ensure the project was completed properly.
