Macro and microbiological growth can have significant impacts on safe and efficient operations in oil & gas applications especially in water injection and underground storage systems. Operators must provide protection against both chemical and microbial corrosion to protect assets from degradation and failure. High density polyethylene (HDPE) coatings have been shown to provide long-term corrosion protection for salt brackish and brine piping. However HDPE is susceptible to biodegradation. This study explores the development and testing of a novel HDPE coating containing a unique blend of antimicrobial powder additive engineered to protect against common bacteria and fungi in brine water. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the biological and material performance of the coatings. Results from microbiological testing showed that coatings enhanced with the material additive resisted and deactivated over 70% of bacteria present in the brine water and over 90% of the harmful fungi which causes fouling in pipelines. Testing results indicated that the additive has no significant impact on the mechanical properties or corrosion resistance of the HDPE lining. These results are significant because the additive protects against harmful microbes while maintaining properties of the HDPE system. This technology provides transformative change in prevention methods for on-shore brine pipeline applications.

UNS S31600 is usually selected for pipes to be applied under conditions where cleanliness is an essential factor. As the lines around Sulfate Removal Unit (SRU) have this requirement (considering the membranes sensibility to any debris), it is common to find this alloy as the preferred one in the material selection criteria for systems like this in Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSO) where the deaerator tower is upstream the SRU, with the role to limit the oxygen content up to 10 ppb in the seawater.


Although the selection of UNS S31600 agrees with ISO 21457 and NORSOK M-001 for this part of seawater treatment system (Figure 1), in 2019 several pits were noticed at pipes downstream the SRU in a FPSO being operated at Brazil Santos basin.

Water-handling oil producing facilities often become target for microbial contamination because treated waters are not sterile – they are inhabited by various microorganisms and contain sufficient inorganic and organic nutrients to support microbial growth. In-service welding is applied for repairs or modifications for pipelines or pipework/equipment that lead to significant economic advantages by avoiding the costs of disrupting the pipeline’s operation decommissioning, draining of fluid inside piping, purging and it maintaining a continuous supply of products to customers. Moreover, in-service welding on pipelines or piping is uncommon practice due to the high risk caused by excessive heat input during weld or accelerated cooling rates. Referring to API 1104, there are two primary concerns with welding onto in-service pipelines. The first concern is to avoid “burning through,” where the welding arc causes the pipe wall to be breached. The second concern is for hydrogen cracking, since welds made in-service cool at an accelerated rate as the result of the flowing contents’ ability to remove heat from the pipe wall. This paper explores the development of an online welding procedure to weld stainless steel 304L, making branch connections to meet business requirements without disrupting the operation.

Aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) are widely used in the oil and gas and nuclear industries. These are typically constructed of carbon steel bottoms and shells with the bottoms susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion control measures include cathodic protection (CP) systems various levels of vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) and combinations of VCIs CP and possibly biocides. The objective of this project was to develop test and validate an ultrasonic testing (UT) resonance probe and a corrosion monitoring cell to quickly evaluate the effectiveness of corrosion control measures with a focus on measures that involve CP alone and a combined application of CP and VCIs. The UT probe is an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) used to generate ultrasonic shear waves for a resonance-based measurement approach. Three tests with the UT probe attached to the back of the carbon steel coupon set on wet sand were conducted in parallel. Test 1 started at open circuit (i.e. no CP) without any corrosion control measures followed by −850 mVCSE CP application later. Test 2 started with −850 mVCSE CP application followed by an open circuit. Test 3 started with both −850 mVCSE CP and VCI application followed by an open circuit. The posttest coupons were cleaned and scanned by a laser profilometer for corrosion depth measurement which was compared to the UT probe data.The resonance sensors successfully detected the onset and progress of corrosion from Cells 1 and 2 as CP was enabled and disabled. The absence of corrosion in Cell 3 also was clearly detected. The fundamental accuracy of the sensors was shown to be on the order of 1–3 µm when the surface being measured is very uniform. However it was not possible to make a quantifiable correlation between the corrosion profiles and the estimates from the sensors. When located over a non-uniform surface the sensors underestimated the amount of thickness loss likely due to scattering effects from feature scale lengths as small as or smaller than the ultrasonic wavelengths used as well as the variation in corrosion depths. Potential research is needed to understand the effects of variations in the surface that are small compared to the ultrasonic beam and even the ultrasonic wavelength. The adhered corrosion product on the coupons also may have affected the thickness readings because some of the ultrasonic beams were likely reflected from the corrosion/air interface in addition to the metal/corrosion interface. Further investigation would be required to determine if this was a significant factor.

This paper presents the results of a study aiming at evaluating the effect of austenite spacing on the sour cracking resistance of a duplex stainless steel. The stress corrosion cracking resistance was assessed using slow strain rate (SSRT) and constant load tests. Under SSRT, a clear effect of the austenite spacing is observed. Above a threshold spacing, the pH-pH2S acceptability domains are smaller as the austenite spacing increases. This effect is however not seen under constant load at 90% of the actual yield strength, suggesting that a dynamic straining or a large plastic strain is needed to highlight the effect of this parameter.

Carbon steel is non-resistant to uniform and pitting corrosion in geothermal brines and high alloyed materials which exhibit excellent performance are relatively costly. Coating systems become an alternative to protect carbon steel from corrosion in the geothermal environment. In this research a coating system consisting of polyaniline and silicon dioxide was optimized by investigating differently synthesized polyaniline types in the coating regarding their protective effect on carbon steel. SEM images of the phosphoric acid and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid doped polyaniline showed different morphology which suggested different physical and chemical properties. The geothermal brine found in Indonesia was simulated by an artificial solution with pH 4 containing 1500 mg/l Cl- 20 mg/l SO42- 15 mg/l HCO3- 200 mg/l Ca2&#43; 250 mg/l K&#43; and 600 mg/l Na&#43;. Evaluation of the coating system was performed by surface analysis of the exposed specimens and electrochemical tests i.e. electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and open circuit potential (OCP) at 150 °C with 1 MPa pressure. Visual assessment of exposed specimens with single component addition into coatings (polyaniline or silicon dioxide) showed that coatings underwent degradation. Therefore a combination of pigments addition was investigated in the tested geothermal brine to observe the improvement of corrosion protection.Key words: geothermal coating polyaniline corrosion

Cesium formate (CsFo) brines have been used as the drilling and/or completion fluids in oil and gas wells in need of high-density fluids.1,2 Multiple studies on corrosion of steels and corrosion resistance alloys (CRA) in formate environments have been reported in the literature.2-8 It was known that the formate brines could undergo significant decomposition to form hydrogen when in contact with catalytic surfaces which CRA can act as. Therefore, there have been concerns that the CRA may catalyze the decomposition of formate brines to accelerate the generation of hydrogen which in turn may embrittle certain CRAs and endanger the relevant well equipment.
