This work focuses on the effect of flow velocity on the corrosion performance of Thermal Spray Aluminium (TSA) Coating obtained by twin-wire arc spraying. Cylindrical electrodes (12 mm diameter) were machined from an S355 steel rod and coated with 300 µm thick TSA (AA 1050). An analytical rotator was employed for testing the coupons at 50 rpm and 600 rpm for 10 d in synthetic seawater. Testing under stagnant conditions was also included. Open Circuit Potential (OCP) and Linear Polarisation Resistance (LPR) measurements were carried out at 18 ±2 °C to assess the flow velocity effect and calculate the corrosion rate. Within 5 days of immersion, the OCP became more positive at higher rotation speeds. White corrosion products and calcareous deposits were observed on the coupon surfaces after 5 days, and the corrosion rate decreased in all cases.

Geothermal resources have been successfully used in the Netherlands for heating districts in agriculture. Due to the high chloride content and the presence of carbon dioxide in some of the geothermal fluids in combination with the intrinsic elevated temperatures these production environments represent a considerable challenge for the integrity of the technical equipment in the geothermal plant. Localized corrosion damage in downhole equipment reported by several operators confirmed the need for a corrosion strategy to mitigate the impact of the aggressiveness of the geothermal fluid under the current operational conditions. To address this a corrosion inhibitor was characterized in the laboratory using a rotating cage to simulate high temperature and high shear stress conditions. Based on the positive outcome of these tests the corrosion inhibitor was successfully implemented in the field. This paper documents the corrosion damage observed in downhole equipment before the use of corrosion inhibition the obtained laboratory test results as well as the experiences from monitoring the field performance of the corrosion inhibitor in this geothermal demanding application.

The oil and gas industry utilize surfactant-type organic corrosion inhibitors as a way to mitigate internal pipeline corrosion. Changes in corrosion rates due to inhibitor addition have been related to adsorption isotherms as a function of the inhibitor concentration. However the question as to how a corrosion inhibitor affects the electrochemical reactions governing CO2 corrosion remains unclear. This research proposed to investigate the aforementioned question by using a systematic approach: four different corrosion inhibitors synthesized in-house were utilized to determine the effect of the tail length on the activation energy of the electrochemical process underlying the corrosion of an API 5L X65 steel in CO2 corrosion at pH 4. The corrosion inhibitors all contained the same head group (dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium) with four different alkyl tail lengths (C4 C8 C12 and C16). A theoretical description of the increase in the activation energy of the electrochemical process underlying CO2 corrosion due to the presence of the corrosion inhibitors was proposed. Such a description also led to the development of a modified Butler-Volmer equation that describes the retardation in charge transfer rates of the electrochemical reactions associated with the corrosion of mild steel. The model is based upon changes in activation energy calculated by an Arrhenius plot. The model was compared with experimental potentiodynamic sweeps for each corrosion inhibitor model compound. As a result the corrosion model predicts the corrosion rate and the open circuit potential in the presence of a corrosion inhibitor with reasonable accuracy.

Major challenges are encountered in the design and construction of deep superhot (>300°C) geothermal wells due to higher temperatures and pressure, and increased corrosiveness of the geothermal fluid. The corrosiveness of the geothermal fluid is due to the chemical composition which includes corrosive gases such as HCl, H2S and CO2. In this study L80-type 1 carbon steel and L80-13Cr stainless steel API casing materials were tested in a simulated superhot geothermal well environment at 350°C in water with Cl, H2S and CO2 for 168 hrs. in both vapor and liquid phases in high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) autoclave to investigate their corrosion behavior. The results showed that both API casing materials, L80-type 1 and L80-13Cr, were prone to corrosion attack in the simulated superhot deep geothermal well environment. The L80 grade Type 1 carbon steel tested in the liquid phase exhibited the highest corrosion rate and demonstrated vulnerability to localized corrosion or cracking in both liquid and vapor phases. Similarly, the L80 grade 13Cr stainless steel is not considered a suitable choice for harsh environments rich in H2S, CO2, and Cl at superheated temperatures. While it was prone to localized corrosion, it exhibited a low uniform corrosion rate (<0.1 mm/year).

Machine learning is a method that allows interpretations of new data using an established database of older data by referring to already-known results (known as “labels”) and extrapolating between them to estimate the label that would be assigned to a different experiment. This can be a powerful tool for corrosion prediction because it makes it possible to estimate a range of corrosion rates for a certain family of materials in a specific range of environments without actually performing experiments. In this paper the machine learning concept was applied to the erosion-corrosion of steels in white liquor a strongly alkaline industrial chemical used for pulping wood chips. Previously obtained corrosion data in white liquor which included different steel compositions particle concentrations and sizes temperatures and fluid properties such as viscosity were compiled and assigned labels based on previous assessments in the industry as passive acceptable marginal or unsuitable according to observed corrosion rate. Models using thirty selected variables were built based on this data using diverse machine learning methods including support vector machines (SVM) decision trees k-nearest neighbor methods (KNN). discriminant analysis etc. Feature selection was attempted for each model. The best accuracies for each method were compiled and assessed regarding their promise for predictive purposes in erosion-corrosion.

Corrosion and scaling are some of the most common challenges in geothermal applications due to the complex brine chemistry combined with the high temperatures and pressures, and the gaseous components. To study mineral scaling at metallic surfaces, appropriate corrosion tests representing the real geothermal reservoir and operating conditions must be selected. This paper focus on the reconstruction of thermal gradients between geothermal fluids and the steel walls of wells and heat exchanger tubes, in laboratory and autoclave flow loop tests (up to 200°C and 300 bar), to simulate scaling and corrosion conditions. The implementation of an electrochemical measurement device makes it possible to monitor changes to the electrochemical behaviour of steel subjected to thermal gradients in these environments and so the corrosion response and in situ evolution of scales. Results from carbon steels (N80 and P110) and stainless steel (13Cr) in artificial geothermal brines representative of Dogger and Soultz geothermal wells in France are presented.

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) in pipingc systems consumes a significant percent of the maintenance budget in the petrochemical industry. Prevention of CUI by the use of (1) thermal spray aluminum, (2) stainless steel pipe, (3) expanded metal cages for personnel protection instead of insulation and (4) aluminum foil wrapping are discussed in terms of long term protection, installed cost and Life cycle cost.

Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) can be a major issue for line pipe exposed to sour environments. In this study, influence of the test solutions on HIC evaluation was investigated from the view point of corrosion. Electrochemical measurements were employed to compare corrosion behavior of line pipe steels between the 0.93N acetate buffer solution and the conventional 0.05N acetate solution.
