Geothermal Energy is currently engineered as an “always on” baseload supply, due to the limited flexibility to throttle the well without scaling and fatigue issues, and it is engineered for maximal efficiency at this output level. Scaling is a major problem in geothermal plants, particularly in cases where the geothermal fluid composition and plant operation make it difficult to control scaling. In such areas, particularly where scale inhibitors cannot be employed, the formation of scales can make the process less efficient and in extreme cases can lead to unexpected shutdown.

Corrosion in crude distillation unit overhead lines is primarily caused by hydrochloric acid at the dew point. Various other contaminants including air, organic acids, H2S, NH3, tramp amines, HCN, mercaptans, phenols, etc. also play a role in overhead corrosion. Mitigation strategies include process solutions such as wash water systems and temperature control, and chemical solutions including amine-based neutralizers and film-forming inhibitors. Despite implementing these strategies, corrosion is invariably observed in the overhead system. Conventional “non-volatile” filmers rely on free liquid to cover the metallurgy. However, the complex nature of overhead geometry and fluid flow make complete metal coverage challenging. This necessitates a different strategy to achieve protection. Here, we present a first of its kind Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VPCI) for protecting overhead systems. Several VPCI candidates were studied in the lab for performance, volatility, and risks (emulsification, pentane solubility, amine salt fouling, thermal stability). Promising VPCI was field trialed in several refineries.

In colder regions, heavy snowfall and pronounced freeze-thaw cycles introduce complexities to the established paradigms governing atmospheric corrosion. Although the problem of chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of austenitic stainless steel drain lines in hydroprocessing units has been well known for many years, new questions on these deadlegs are arising with the renewable units handling biofuel feeds. Some potential issues are in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) units and certain pretreatment units, wherever these units have high pressure SS piping. Many of the hydroprocessing unit case histories of leaks and cracks occurred shortly after startups from turnarounds and were attributed to water not being drained before startup. In contrast, some of the renewable units may have a risk of water condensing in deadlegs even during normal operation. The hydroprocessing unit case histories have been compiled to help to define the conditions, such as main line operating temperature and pressure which contribute to SCC in the deadlegs. UNS N06985 is a nickel-based alloy with additions of Mo, Cu and W. Because of its high strength and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), cold worked UNS N06985 has been extensively used for OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods). The SCC initiation has been studied in Cl-H2S-CO2 containing sour environments; and the SCC resistance was often evaluated using slow strain rate testing (SSRT) for screening by short-term testing and using tensile or C-ring for verification by long-term autoclave testing exposures1. UNS N06985 showed high resistance to SCC at high temperatures in elemental sulfur containing environments with moderate chlorides2.

Traditionally, a zinc-rich primer, epoxy midcoat and polyurethane topcoat have been the standard 3-coat solvent borne system used for coating structural steel, such as in the maintenance of bridges.
