Experiences with Black Powder in pipelines on the continental Norwegian Shelf (NCF) is limited to a few pipelines. One of the pipelines has recently been cleaned for inspection and analysis of the powder has been performed. In Pipeline Operation Statoil pipeline cleaning or operational pigging is a part of the maintenance program. First operational cleaning runs gave a slurry as the pigging product. After some years the slurry changed to black powder and caused operational challenges. Due to the low radioactivity (LRA) and the composition of the powder some restrictions for the receiving plant were identified. Modifications at the receiving plants have been performed to be able to clean the pipeline in a safe manner. A main business driver for the modifications at the receiving facilities is to ensure an environmentally friendly and safe operation. The powder has not given any problems in daily operation. After the first incident with black powder the receiving facility got filter modules installed that handles the powder in daily operation. This paper describes some of the history for the pipeline the cleaning history challenges and limitations and the analysis of the powder compared to previous analysis.
